TableLayouts and TextMorphs

I've been wrestling recently with TableLayouts and TextMorphs. The problem is that TableLayouts don't work nicely with morphs which dynamically resize in one direction based on changes made in the other. Specifically, the TextMorphs' height depends directly on their width. During layout, the LayoutCells are computed prior to setting the submorphs' width, so TextMorphs with hResizing = #spaceFill and their owners with vResizing = #shrinkWrap are not fitted correctly to their cells. This can also have an effect on siblings of the TextMorph which have vResizing = #spaceFill (the owner has rubberBandCells on). Attached is a morph illustrating the problem. It consists of a RectangleMorph with three lines. Each line is a RectangleMorph with a green marker (a RectangleMorph) and a TextMorph. Resize the whole thing slowly. When a TextMorph changes its height, the green markers and the cell size for the line is wrong. I've had little success fixing this behavior. It definitely seems that TableLayouts are better suited to objects which don't resize in this way. I'd hate to think how difficult it would be to solve this in general for layouts with wrapping. It seems reasonable instead to define a TableLayout subclass which handles this, but is restricted to simple columns and rows. Even then, I'm running into problems. (Even forcing the layout to be computed twice only seems to work for the rows, and not the columns.) Does anyone have any suggestions or interest in working on this with me? -Jesse

Standard headless release for Linux?

I am looking for a headless Linux VM. I checked squeak.org, the Squeak Swiki, the Swiki Swiki, and Ian's Squeak download page, but I can find only one reference and that suggests I need to rebuild the VM myself with -DHEADDLESS (which I can do, but would really prefer not to bring an untested self-created VM into the world). Any pointers to the right place to find this would be appreciated. Mike

Your observation is correct. squeak-annc is/was intended for announcements, but is little used. So the two posts that you got for the Whisker release and the CD are in that list for a good reason, but there should be more. Essentially, whenever something new is available, or something relevant to the Squeak community happens, it should be announced there. But, mailing lists don't really work like that. Most Squeak users (including me) subscribe to this list here and don't see any use in the squeak-annc list. So if I have something to announce, where would I do it? Here, of course, not in squeak-annc. I can fully understand your situation. In the "western" world, we're very much used to fast connections, lots of disk space for mailboxes, cheap internet access. However, in countries like yours that is not so simple. These things are still quite expensive there, and availability of resources is often limited. Others, like most african countries, have no reasonable internet access at all, which is really bad. What can we do about it? Well, sharing resources like Dan Shafer proposed is great but works in single cases only. He's certainly not able to send everybody a Smalltalk book who needs one and does not have easy access to a large book store. One thing that would probably help you would be to have a digest version of the mailing list. It would cut down a bit on the headers filling up your mailbox but probably not enough. Your idea of a zipped downloadable archive is great, and with Bob's zip archive classes I will probably implement just that next week. I have a www server under my control where I could give you access to the mailing list in monthly or weekly collections as zipped files. There are a lot of Squeak-related informations to be found there. BTW and IMHO are not Squeak-specific, but common abbreviations of common english idioms. Since my native language is not english, either, I can fully understand that you're a bit puzzled by this. BTW: By the way IMHO: In my humble opinion Since I'm writing this mail offline (I have to pay by online time by the minute, too...), I can't currently look up a dictionary of common idioms and abbreviations on the internet, but I am fairly sure that such things exist. On a Mac, System 9.0.4, 500MB of RAM, Netscape 4.7 fails the plugin test. It runs out of memory before anything but the project navigator is visible. I have given Nav 50MB of RAM. I'll boost it and see if that helps but my guess is not a lot of folks have the luxury of going past that size. [BUG] doWithIndex: problem in 3.0final

My apologies if this has been discussed already, but I had the following problem filing in a change set into the 3.0final image: I had a class with a an instance variable named ³index² (very generic I know, but in the context, it makes perfect sense), and in a method on that class I was sending doWithIndex: [:eachMumble eachIndex | <snip> ] to an ordered collection. Trying to file this in, I got a syntax error (which wasn¹t highlighted, BTW), replacing eachIndex with text saying that ³index² is already used in the class. Looking at SequenceableCollection¹s withIndexDo:, which gets called eventually, it uses a block variable called index. Is this sort of ³inlining² to be expected? Thanks, Fred Mannby

Interesting. So, you had no problems running ComSwiki with Win2K. Could you try doing reload a couple of times in a row on viewing a page? Others have reported that this crashes the server. [BUG] Form -> #pixelCompare:with:at:

Hi, In 2.9a updates thru 3.1alpha latest update #3696. Also shows same problem with a Squeak3.0final updated to #3696. Form -> #pixelCompare:with:at: always returns 0 if using 32bit forms. Seems to work as expected in 8bit and grayscale... Sorry, I don't have a fix... -Rick-
