There is a link to squeak.org in a brief article about a speach held by Alan Kay in Hamburg yesterday. Mensch und Computer: Die Revolution macht Quiek http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/jk-05.09.02-006/ heise.de is a high-traffic website and "Quiek" of course is the German translation of "Squeak". About Improving the management of Wiki

I'm still struggling to write my Table morph (the state of documentation in some of the examples I've found on the web makes this easier than using their code) and I could really use some help with this stuff. Even ignoring layout, there are _lots_ of things I would like to know about Morph which are not in that chapter, presumably for reasons of space. It's only about 25 pages long, and it really needed to be the size of the whole book. Still, surely another couple of pages on GeeMailMorphs (what _have_ they got to do with mail, and how the xxxx do you use them, anyway?) and/or BookMorphs would have been possible. I'm *not* saying that what is there is *bad*. Far from it. I'm saying it isn't *enough* and it isn't up to date. IMHO, anyone reading this and getting interested in Squeak webserving: PWS is more or less obsolete code (as in "unmaintained" AFAICT). Use Comanche instead which a lot of people use and which works very good including being the base of Swiki. The point is that the book spends quite a few pages on PWS and only 1 or 2 on the Comanche "research project". This doesn't mean it is a _bad_ book, only that we already need a 3.2 edition.

Building external Plugins on OS-X

Folks, A couple of weeks ago, my Squeak VM Builder certificate expired (yes they *do*), so I set out to make myself comfortable on my new platform. I tried out this "newfangled VMMaker stuff" which promptly turned out to be absolutely wonderful -- THANKS to all involved: Tim for VMMaker, John for the detailed instructions to build using ProjectBuilder on OS-X, and last not least to all who contributed to the relevant Swiki pages. Being a total ProjectBuilder newbie, I am however still struggling to build my first external plugin for the OS-X VM. Here's what I did so far: * In ProjectBuilder's "Targets" tab, define a new target "RePlugin.bundle" (of type "Bundle") * In the "Files" tab, add a group "RePlugin" under Sources/Cross/plugins, and add to it the files from platforms/Cross/plugins/RePlugin/*.[ch] plus the VMMaker-made src/plugins/rePlugin/rePlugin.c * In the tabbed editor for the new target, in the tab "Build Settings", I copied the "Compiler Settings" (optimization level and compiler flags) from the "Squeak VM Opt" target, and added /Developer/Headers/FlatCarbon to the "Search Paths / Header" [which provoked two InternalErrors but PB then found the headers OK -- I'm still using the 2001 tools with gcc 2.95.2] * In the target editor tab "Bundle Settings", I filled out "Basic Information" (BNDL/FAST etc), "Display Information" and "Icon" That's about it. I hit "Build" (once more...), and do indeed get a build/RePlugin.bundle (with the cute Squeak Lego icon) -- only its Contents/MacOS is empty, and lo, the PB console has complained: Linking .../Squeak/build/RePlugin.bundle/Contents/MacOS/RePlugin (1 error) Undefined symbols: _interpreterProxy Hmm. /usr/bin/ld is not happy. I'd be grateful for tips and hints on where my setup is wrong or incomplete. Cheers, Helge

MIDI on OSX testing

If anyone wants to try playing MIDI on OSX I've got a new sqMacMIDI.c file, as well as a VM compiled with the changes (VM generated from an 3.2 (4956) image). It seems to work on my system, which is a dual-450 G4 using a MIDISport 4x4 USB MIDI interface. You can also playback through virtual MIDI ports, for instance soft-synths or ports created through apps like MIDIPatchbay. I'm running OSX 10.2, but 10.1.5 works too last time I checked. The SimpleMIDIPort class works 'as is' with the new external code. At least I can download a fresh image and play the ScorePlayer demo through any of the MIDI ports or through Quicktime. I didn't need to make any changes to MIDIPlugin or the primitives' glue code. I have a MultiMIDIPort class also working though the code could use some rearranging - right now it's all class methods (which may make sense since I can't foresee there being multiple instances). There are many issues (buffering, time-stamping, using semaphores, etc) that could greatly benefit from someone with more MIDI knowledge taking a look. I've got things working to the point of being able to send notes, program changes, and control changes to any port/channel for immediate playback. I haven't gone very far beyond that except for adding some MIDI input data buffering (and there's probably a better way...) Anyone brave & patient enough to try this stuff out let me know - I very open to suggestions and constructive criticism (or even better: any MIDI expert who wants to take the code to the next level..) There are definitely some rough edges and kludges - but I think a good foothold. Thanks, Jay

FWIW, I tend to use drag-and-drop to launch Squeak. I keep my Squeak-ish folders organized in icon view with the VMs at the top and the images right below. Then I just find the image I'm interested in and drop it on a VM that looks appropriate. I have tons of images and tons of VMs and this works well for me. Cheers, Bob
