Squeak and composite desktop (beryl/compiz)

I'm just installed ubuntu, which using composite desktop enhancements. Squeak can't draw itself correctly when running in such mode. It looks like a semi-transparent window. Does anybody knows how to fix that? -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

AddMiorph causes VM coma? Hi Blake, It looks like your son found a good one.* Can he do it again? And can you explain how to reproduce the error? I tried it and failed to get stopped. Which is not surprising. What I did was: (In a fresh squeak 3.10 version 7159, opened with a mac classic vm 3.8.9beta7) Dropped a .gif file on the image (which gave me a sketch morph) Opened a workspace (Worldmenu>open>workspace) and from the menu in the title bar set create textual references to dropped morphs to true then I dropped the sketch onto the workspace (which created a textual reference to the morph in my case sketch3255) wrote, selected and did a "print it" on 'World addMorph: sketch3255' . This caused me no problems. I then deleted the sketch; reselected the phrase and did it again. Still no problems. ----- What did your son do different? Can you supply a report similar in detail to the above? If you can show how to reproduce the problem then someone may be able to help you track down the trouble. [ANN] Logging api

Hello all, and happy new year, There are three Logging packages for Squeak that I know of. 1. SimpleLog 2. Toothpick 3. LogEngine there is also a Null logger. This package "Logging", available from SqueakMap and in Universes, is slightly higher level 'front end' api to these logging back ends. best regards Keith =================== from the class comment Convenient usage: 'annotated values' self log x: 10 y: 20 z: 30. To select a specific log severity level (i.e. not the temporary one featured above). self log info x: 10 y: 20 z: 30. To log the current method's input parameters. Rectangle-#corner: topLeftPoint extent: heightWidthPoint self log debug this. would be the same as self log corner: topLeftPoint extent: heightWidthPoint. To log the current methods variables: self log debug vars instance.

etoys tutorial

I am trying to have a look to the tutorial : *Make your own Etoy of the page http://www.squeakland.org/index.html the project opens in my browser with the plugin but i just get an empty white screen once it is loaded. * how it should be ? if not please give a image i should use to view the tutorial.and a link to the project file on the way i found the page http://www.squeakland.org/projects/ a litle strange it displays the script not the list of files!. at worst can someone make a video of the tutorial. thanks. Guidance on use of Socket

Hello list, I'm trying to create a simple listening service on localhost port 3456, I assumed this would wait for 30 seconds, then proceed but it singals ConnectionClosed error at the #waitForDataFor: message: | sock | sock := Socket new. sock listOn: 3456. sock waitForDataFor: 30. Hello, all, My son is working with morphs and has a sketchmorph sublcass that he's adding to the World like this: World addMorph: aCity. This causes Squeak to go away and never come back. Alt+. does not work. When I debug, it seems to hang up in the CopyReplace code of the AddMorph routine. I've put halts in his initialize code thinking he's looping somehow but I sure can't see it. I can run the CopyReplace code once, then the VM goes back to that code, and if it tries to run it again, it hangs up. It's trying to replace with a start of 2 and a stop of 1, but that appears to be a legimate "add". I'm kind of stumped as to where to look. ===Blake===

[ANN] Hydra VM (multithreaded squeak VM) showing first results

Hello everyone, i would like to make anyone know, what i have done during December in a collaboration with Andreas, for creating a VM, which can run multiple squeak images in separate native threads, running in parallel. Hydra VM is codename, which we have choose to call this project :) Currently, i had refactored enough code in Interpreter/Plugins and win32 platform-specific code to be able to load and run multiple images in same process. There is much to be done left, but i think, at the moment, there is enough support in VM to write tests and experiment, without much risk of crashes. If you run single image, and don't start second or more, it's stable! (i'm sitting in VM, editing code during the day, saving image e.t.c. - about 8 hours or so, and no crashes ). Of course, expect crashes, when you run new image. :) But there is nuances: since i'm too lazy to look for a stripped down image with limited number of facilities, i'm using stock image to run in second thread. Of course, this is very risky , because it's trying to use everything (display/input) and this leads to crash. So, currently, to prevent that, i changed snapshot:andQuit:embedded: method to simply don't go past tests, which are running at starting image (there is a ways to detect if you running as main interpreter or not). I'm going to make further changes to ensure, that VM will not crash, even when trying to run stock images which may think that they are interactive. Meanwhile, to one, who might have interest, you can download and start playing with it. Sorry, it's currently running on win32 platform only. If there any interest in porting to other platforms i would glad to help. Lately, i have done implementing channels , a framework for fast and cheap inter-image communication. If you load a HydraVM package, there is already some code, which using them: #transcript channel, used by HydraTranscript class , as a simple way to see what other image doing, by redirecting all transcript output to main, interactive, image. #doIt channel - a channel, which listen non-interactive image, where you can send doits.
