[ANN] System Events Monitor

A browser for the WordNet lexical db in Smalltalk, anybody?

Hi list, has anyone started with/plans for a browser for a WordNet lexical db in Smalltalk? I checked their Prolog formatted files, - http://wordnet.princeton.edu/obtain actually read them into a Squeak .image; they need only a handful of memory MB (7.5, strings as yet not symbolized) plus less than 10MB of disk space if gloss texts would be stored in the .changes file. Also, if anyone already has (or had) ideas for a GUI for a WordNet browser in Squeak please let me know (!) I cannot say I like their basic Web interface (it has nothing that a Smalltalk browser offers) - http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?o0=1&o1=1&r=1&s=small+talk&i=1&h=10… and think that can be done better for local use, for example in class rooms (and of course when authoring documentation for Squeak ;) but, unlikely for the OLPC because of the footprint. Freeze when exploring Dictionary with nontrivial size :(

Hi list, Loading the WordNet lex db into Squeak gives a Dictionary with some 150'000 entries. When inspecting the dict then GC seems to get involved during scrolling :( even when no entry is selected. But when exploring it, the first click just consumes CPU and alt-. shows debugger but the .image is already frozen :( I can imagine that I'm not the first one who runs into explorer+dictionary freeze. Waiting for 3.11 artifacts.

The useful part of Edgar's point was that the 3.11 folder on the ftp site sits empty. I personally do not want to have to understand what is on the pbwiki or to navigate keith's new ways of doing things in order to play and test out a new squeak image. What unsettles me at the moment is that two very powerful programmers are taking 3.11 in some very new directions relative to what the community is used to. While I have a great respect in Matthew's judgment and ability to explain what he is doing, I have found from experience that Keith's notions are more of a gamble. Keith is a gatekeeper for ideas from other communities like Ruby. He is powerfully fast. And he is focused on core changes that bring with them a lot of power and ease. On the other hand, I am afraid I have a great trouble trying to wade into his explanations. They get (for me) too technical, too quickly. They leave me scratching my head as to what the big simple picture is all about. So I am left with no easy way of understanding or judging his work. That in itself makes me uneasy. He and I have discussed this in private via emails. My other concern about this release is that it is actually a development project. The code is being written concurrent with the release. Andreas made a suggestion that each release should harvest what is already available in order to reduce risk. The plan for this release (and the talents of the release team) seem to be more state-of-the-not-quite-invented-art. This is a risk to the stability and timeline of the release. 3.9 took two years and was release with so much stuff, integration bugs were almost assured. Users ran into some good ones. 3.10.2 took a year even though it was modest in scope. It too was released with some very obvious bugs that hadn't been in 3.9. The main learning that came out of it was how brittle a release became when it was dependent on MC for development. The current 3.11 release is an effort to find a viable way to maintain a release again. But where is the project now? And where are the (understandable) artifacts? As a bug tracker, my experience warns me of trouble when big steps are taken w/o feedback. So I am wondering if Edgar's point can't be addressed. Could we get an alpha image of the current stable and unstable versions of 3.11 onto the ftp site? This would serve as a check on backward compatibility and usability for 3.11. Which VM for OSX

There seem to be more than 1 VM available for OSX/intel. Do they have different features? Which one should I use? I would like one that is stable, fast, and osx-feature-rich ... strictly in that order :-) Thanks!

Alien structural change

For the very few folks that are working with Alien I'm about to make a structural change that is needed to support floating point arguments on PowerPC. Because of how the os-x powerpc abi works we *do* need to know what type the parameters are in order to decide if that 32bit data item is a float or long, or if 64bit a long long or double. Parms are passed based on if they are Floating point or non-floating point. This is a bit of a pain because MacIntel users still can pass integer, float, long long, double without regard to typing, yet if they expect to run on PowerPC a bit more care and typing is required. In the example below the primFFICallResult:with:with: call has no idea if the alien 1 or alien 2 are long long or double. testCallingSquenceLongLong2 | alien1 alien2 result who | alien1 := Alien newC: 8. alien2 := Alien newC: 8. alien1 signedLongLongAt: 1 put: 1. alien2 signedLongLongAt: 1 put: 42. er or is that alien1 doubleAt: 1 put: 1. alien2 doubleAt: 1 put: 42. who := Alien lookup: 'ffiTestLongLong' inLibrary: 'IA32ABI'. result := who primFFICallResult: (Alien new: 8) with: alien1 with: alien2. self should: [(result signedLongLongAt: 1) = (1+42)]. alien1 free. alien2 free. Now in order to cheat a bit here we will allow you to say who primFFICallResult: (Alien new: 8) with: 1.0 with: 42.0. because we know the element being passed is a floating point squeak object so we will assume we should treat it as a Double parm. This of course won't work very well if you are dealing with a Float so you would need to use the who primFFICallResultWithFloatParms: (Alien new: 8) with: 1.0 with: 42.0. with: (ByteArray with: 4 with: 4) Remember if you do: who primFFICallResult: (Alien new: 8) with: oneParm with: twoParm. where oneParm/twoParm is *usually* a float you really need to take care and say who primFFICallResult: (Alien new: 8) with: oneParm asFloat with: twoParm asFloat. Lastly if you do who primFFICallResultWithFloatParms: (Alien new: 8) with: 1 with: 42. with: (ByteArray with: 4 with: 4) The we'll assume oneParm and twoParm are floats and not do any autoconversion if say you pass an integer and your results will be unexpected, or trigger an primitive failure. -- = = = ======================================================================== John M. John's latest OS X VM's are always at: ftp://ftp.smalltalkconsulting.com/ Latest mainline Squeak one is Squeak 3.8.19beta2U.app.zip There are other ones for various purposes in his Experimental folder. 3.8.x Release Notes.rtf tells all about the changes.
