Leadership meeting July 16 report

{I really thought I had posted this; apologies for the lateness] In the spirit of trying to use squeak technology when possible, we have been trying out the Qwaq Forums system for our meetings with some encouraging success but also some echo problems plaguing the sound. But, hey, skype conference calling actually worked for us this time. To prove it, Randal sang like Kermit for us; twice. Craig reported the delayed release of the Squeak 4/Spoon code promised last time due to classbuilder problem (surviving no system dictionary) needing work. Randal will write and release a call for comments on which webserver choice people prefer. We agreed a two week time limit so that we can aim to reach closure on this soon. We are still asking for responses to the re-licensing request; we still have a number of significant contributors not yet sigend up. Swazoo 2.x has streaming upload and download capability and can easily handle such big files. I tested with few GB by myself. On both Squeak and VW. Hmm, it seems that with current Seaside(I'm using 2.8) large file upload mught be hard task. And for file size, not all files have that size.(Sorry for my poor english) But some of the files will have that size. My current idea is that I should create module(?) for Comanche or Swazoo for File Upload (this just process multipart/form request for file upload with additional parameters) and small web application or module for processing download url.(This might be possible with Seaside with RESTable URL support or simple module). [Q] File Upload/Download Server, Comanche or Swazoo

Hi, First, I do not want to create flame war or something; I just like to hear opinions. 1. Which one is easy to create file upload and download web application? I've created small PIM web application using Seaside but this file transfer application is different from my previous one; it just takes upload and generate link for file and make the download happen when the link be requested. 2. Which one shows better performance for this problem? File size will be up to 10 or more GB but number of concurrent users are at most 10 or 20. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm working on the SqueakGtk for the summer of code and I would like to say some news about the Gtk support on Squeak. I've added support of new widgets : * GtkAboutDialog (added some fields) * GtkFontSelectionDialog * GtkAccelLabel * GtkLinkButton * GtkScaleButton * GtkVolumeButton * WebKit * ... And fixed a memory leaks (but there are others memory leaks to fix), I've create some basic tools an inspector, a transcript, and a nice browser :p There is a basic support of the Omnibrowser (only read-only now, but I'm working on it) The next big step will be to finished the support of the Omnibrowser, the basic tools and the creation of a start interface. Subcanvas

Hi all. I'm about to start work on a project called "Subcanvas", which will be a refactoring of the Canvas class. The intention is that this forms a platform for other GUI projects, including a possible future version of Morphic. It will be a general 2-D drawing API and event handling system. Is anybody interested in this? Does anybody have any comments on any of the following? Are there any annoyances with the current Canvas class that people want to rant about? Current "design sketches" are at http://gulik.pbwiki.com/Canvas. This API will be the main graphics / event-handling API for my SecureSqueak project (http://gulik.pbwiki.com/SecureSqueak). It is likely that Morphic will be ported to it at some stage. The code will be written using Namespaces and my own Package system, and it will be the first real trial of my Namespaces architecture. Features of it are: * Some canvases can have child canvases, each with a z-index. These could be used, e.g., to implement movable windows, sprites, clipped scrollable areas, or flyweight graphics. This will use the underlying graphics system's capabilities. * The Canvas will be a general abstraction for underlying 2-D vector-based or raster-based drawing APIs - e.g. Forms/BitBlt, OpenGL, VNC. * An event handling system will also be part of this package. Mouse events will have a canvas (or sub-canvas) coordinate; keyboard events will be sent to the canvas that has the "keyboard focus". * Canvases must be "secure"; as this will be part of SecureSqueak. Specifically: * Canvas methods must be locked down so that users cannot gain unauthorised access to anything or cause destructive behaviour. * Drawing operations will be clipped. Having access to a canvas only allows the user to draw in that particular area. * Stalled event handlers or drawOn: methods will not affect the operation of other Canvases on the screen. * The coordinate system will use micrometers; 0@0 will be at the bottom left corner of the canvas. Each Canvas will provide a "pixelPitch" method to return the number of micrometers in each pixel (if that Canvas has pixels :-) ) so that pixel-based operations are possible. I don't know how to handle fonts - I don't know what the pros/cons of having a font API built in to the canvas is, or whether it is better to have the font drawing done externally by each application. advice on efficient socket programming sought

Hi list Are there some guidelines available on doing efficient socket programming with Squeak for something like a server? My read pattern will be: - read one to four bytes - read a chunk of up to 8k bytes, the number of bytes is encoded in the bytes read before, these chunks can be either binary or text, again this depends on the bytes read above - repeat My write pattern will be similar. It could be made into bulk writes of up to 8k. Does it make sense to use Socket or is it too much hassle and I should use SocketStream? If I should go for SocketStream is constantly flipping between #binary and #ascii a bad idea? If is it preferable to run #ascii and convert the integer protocol constants to Characters or run #binary and send #asString to the resulting ByteArray? Cheers Philippe

Technology choice for the next generation of www.squeak.org and friends

The Squeak Leadership Team concluded in this week's meeting that we should be moving forward on choosing the next technology for the core Squeak websites, such as www.squeak.org. I've been selected to put out a call for any last-minute comments on the two proposals that have been offerred so far, or soliciting any further proposals. I won't repeat the comments already offered. You can review the webteam mailing list history for the past few months at places like http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/webteam/, particularly the messages in March, April, and July. Following the end of the comment period, the Leadership Team will evaluate the proposals and comments, and select the path forward, and invite the participants to begin and manage the migration work. Please submit your comments to squeak-dev and/or webteam before 30 July 2008. That will give us a week to absorb the info before our next team meeting. Thank you.
