generalizedYellowButtonMenu

Hi! Can someone please explain what is the preference "generalizedYellowButtonMenu" for? It is by default enabled in Squeak and it breaks the yellowButtonPressed event in mouseDown: methods. I've tried to Google it, but the only thing I found, that it makes problems in other packages too. Am I missing something? This was introduced somewhere in 3.9 I think, but I'm not sure where and why. Does someone know? Thanks in advance, Elod

Embracing Projects

Folks - I always felt that one of the least used "big ideas" in Squeak is that of projects. Projects are incredibly powerful but have often been severely misunderstood. A Project in Squeak can define an entire environment (MVC, Morphic, Tweak), it can be a modification to an existing environment, it can identify a set of tools to be used in some context and more. The progress that we've made with refactoring of class Project makes it feasible to illustrate the power of projects. If you install the attached change set in an updated trunk image, you will find a new type of project available - a GamesProject. When you choose this type of project you will notice that it downloads and installs the MorphicGames package that Edgar just announced (thanks Edgar!), sets up the environment with a set of games before launching into it. (note that I didn't go as far as setting up the menu bar with games, removing the tools, sealing the programmer facilities etc. but all of this is possible and should be considered for the various types of projects) And of course, when we ship the next image, we could actually include a number of such "proto projects" like the GamesProject - it takes a tiny amount of space but makes it very accessible and very visible from an user point of view. As a conseqence, we can hopefully ship the next Squeak version with (proto-)Games, Etoys, VMMaker, Seaside and whatnot projects. Thoughts? Cheers, - Andreas

vm crash

Hi folks! I have a production system running on top of squeak and the vm crashes after about 6 or 7 ours of testing, I need some help understanding the attached crash.dmp because i don't really know what's going on besides of what you can read on the stack dump, apparently theres is a problem with a BalloonEngine drawing primitive, i was wandering if somebody could provide me a hint on what could be failing... The system runs on windows embedded with a 3.8 based image. thanks in advance! -- cheers Gonzalo Romano

Seaside Installation Instructions

Seaside Installation Instructions Welcome to the Squeak page for installing the Seaside web framework. This page will show you how to install two different versions of Seaside in two different ways. The first is called 2.8.3 and is a little older and a little more stable. We will install that version using a package management tool called Monticello. The second is called 3.0 and is the latest version of Seaside. We will install that using a web page at http://builder.seaside.st. Installing 2.8.3 1. Once you have opened Squeak, click on the background called the World. Select open and then Monticello Browser. In the top right corner of that window will be a symbol with two squares. Click that to open up the window to a more useful size. 2. Click on the +Repository button. Select HTTP. You will see a template. We need to change something there. Replace http://foo.com/bar with http://www.squeaksource.com/HttpKomServer. Press Accept. Before we install Seaside, we need to install a server that Seaside will use. 3. In the large, bottom right window ensure the repository you’ve just added is selected and then press Open. 4. In the small window that appears we will need to install three things: DynamicBindings; KomServices; and; KomHttpServer. It’s best to install these three packages in that order. 5. In the left hand pane click on DynamicBindings. Then in the right hand window click the topmost version. Then click Load. Do that also for KomServices and KomHttpServer. 6. Now lets use Monticello to install Seaside. Using the same instructions as above, create an HTTP repository aimed at http://www.squeaksource.com/Seaside. Then open it. 7. In the left hand pane of the window that appears find Seaside2.8a1 and select it. Then in the right hand window choose the topmost package. Press Load. 8. We’re almost done. Click on the World, select open, and choose Workspace. In that window write WAKom startOn: 8080. Highlight that. We need to tell Squeak to do it. On a Mac click Option+click to pull up the correct menu. On PC right click. Choose Do It. 9. WAKom is a mix of two titles. WA stands for Seaside. Kom stands for the Comamche server. Executing this command starts the server on port 8080. 10. Open a browser and go to http://localhost:8080/seaside. Installing 3.0 1. Go to http://builder.seaside.st 2. Forgo all the options for now. Go to 3. and press Load Script. That will download a file called seaside-3.0.0-alpha5.cs. 3. Open Squeak and drag that file onto the background called the World. 4. Click “install into new change set” and wait while it installs. 5. Now follow steps 8-10 in the 2.8.3 instructions. Realize they don’t work. Go to the Process Browser. Kill the process. Try WAComancheAdaptor startOn: 8080. See that that fails as well. Conclude that Seaside 3.0 is either no longer compatible with Squeak 3.10.2 or there is some other way to make it work. Say screw it and go to Starbucks.

Faster FileStream experiments

I just gave a try to the BufferedFileStream. As usual, code is MIT. Implementation is rough, readOnly, partial (no support for basicNext crap & al), untested (certainly has bugs). Early timing experiments have shown a 5x to 7x speed up on [stream nextLine] and [stream next] micro benchmarks See class comment of attachment Reminder: This bench is versus StandardFileStream. StandardFileStream is the "fast" version, CrLf anf MultiByte are far worse! This still let some more room... Integrating and testing a read/write version is a lot harder than this experiment, but we should really do it. Nicolas

1] ABOUT RECENT CHANGES IN TRUNK: st-80 line end policy was really simple (always CR). It was the best choice possible as long as staying in Smalltalk world. However, I was kind of fed-up with all the hacks for converting to/from various line end flavours, half of which not working... - Since communicating with external world is vital for my own view of Squeak - Since It is far more simple to handle the zoo of line delimiters in Kernel (CompositionScanner / DispalyScanner / String / Stream) I just added this support in trunk. Now, we should be able to import any line termination transparently in the image. For exporting, nothing changed, we still have to care, no magic here, this is driven by external applications requirements. To profit by the new possibilities, just use: - (String>>linesDo:) rather than searching indexOf: Character cr - (Stream>>nextLine) rather than upTo: Character cr There might be some LF/CR-LF support lacking here and there (there are so many #cr senders...), but that shouldn't be hard to fix. 2] IMPORTANT NOTE AND QUESTION: SocketStream>>nextLine does insist on finding a CR-LF pair. This is used in some major protocols. But I find this abusive, and would like to change the default behavior to that of Stream. This would be a nice property that a SocketStream behaves like a FileStream or an ExternalStream. Should I proceed ? Nicolas

Cheers, - Andreas This is a list of the main achievements that went into the trunk image. The list is in reverse chronological order, newest additions on the top: [------------------------- updated 11/28/09 ---------------------------] Menu Bar -------- Squeak now has a standard menu bar to make it easier to discover its contents for new users, replacing the World menu as the prime source for launching tools and other activities. Compiler -------- Support for literal ByteArray syntax has been added. Byte arrays can now be written as #[1 2 3 "..."] instead of #(1 2 3) asByteArray avoiding the need for conversion and a more compact default representation. Numbers ------- Some prime related changed: Integer>>isPrime is now a deterministic test, Integer>>isProbablyPrime a probabilistic variant. Intger>>highBit and Integer>>lowBit have been sped up significantly. CRLF Handling ------------- CR and LF are now treated interchangeably in rendering. Both cause a line break and both are not displayed. Various line related methods have been updated to deal with both CR and LF. Collections ----------- Dictionary is no longer a subclass of Set. HashedCollection is the new superclass for both Set and Dictionary. Conversion of OrderedCollection and SortedCollection to Arrays has been sped up significantly. [------------------------- updated 11/14/09 ---------------------------] Kernel ------ Support for isolation layers has been retired. "self-evaluation" as a concept has been removed since every object can be forced to be self-evaluating by asking for its storeString. Projects -------- Project refactoring are an ongoing process. Project itself has been split into Project / MVCProject / MorphicProject such that Project itself is abstract and various requests are handled properly in the subclasses. Collections ----------- Several improvements have been added to Collections. Sets have become faster, Arrays now print in brace form by default, Dictionary>>keys return an array instead of a set. Monticello ---------- Various load-order issues have been fixed within Monticello, making loading of packages more robust. Monticello and PackageInfo have been sped up in several areas making browsing of large repositories significantly faster. Faster UTF-8 Conversions ------------------------ Generalize trick from ByteString>>#squeakToUtf8 to every converter using class instance variables. Dramatically improves performance of file operations. FaceLift -------- An adaptation of Newspeak's Facelift look has been added to Squeak under the code name of "Botox" (meaning a small set of carefully chosen injections to improve the out of the box look for Squeak). Shout ----- Shout (Syntax Hightlighting As You Type) has been added to this image. As with all new additions, it can be easily unloaded for people wanting smaller images. ToolBuilder conversion ---------------------- All the tools have been given a make-over, removing pretty much all of the interface construction code and replacing it by ToolBuilder specs. This removes a huge amount of dependencies between the tools and particular UI frameworks, and puts all the UIs on equal footing (there were several tools that were either not all or only partially supported in MVC before). New Text Editors ---------------- A complete new set of text editors (Editor, TextEditor and SmalltalkEditor) are available. They replace TextMorphEditor and break one of the last hard links between Morphic and MVC. With the new editors it will finally become possible to have Morphic be self-contained without the need to rely on portions of MVC. Morphic Text Improvements ------------------------- Morphic has now regular blinking insertion point cursors instead of the (virtually invisible) static cursor previously. In addition, various problems with mixing fonts and the heights of text have been fixed. Preference Pragmas ------------------ Preference pragmas simplify dealing with preferences by providing automatic discovery for preferences defined in your classes. No more littering Preferences; you can now define preferences local to your class and store the values in regular class variables. The preference gets automatically discovered by using the <preference:category:description:type:> pragma. Beautiful, Anti-Aliased Fonts ----------------------------- We have a new set of beautiful anti-aliased Deja Vu bitmap fonts in this image. The default sizes include 7pt (for handheld devices), 9pt (generic text, list and menu fonts) as well as 12pt (window and title fonts): Deja Vu 7pt: Regular, Bold, Italics Deja Vu 9pt: Regular, Bold, Italics Deja Vu 12pt: Regular, Bold, Italics Russian Language Support ------------------------ To input text in Russian language, install a font supporting the Cyrillic alphabet, then switch the locale accordingly: TTFileDescription installFamilyNamed: 'Arial'. Locale switchToID: (LocaleID isoLanguage: 'ru'). This will enable Russian text input, display and processing. Improved Truetype Support ------------------------- The new TTFileDescription works just like TTFontDescription but operates on the files directly on disk. This helps greatly to support the m17n efforts since we no longer load all the fonts into memory. To use the available fonts on your platform, select some text, hit Cmd-k (Alt-k) and select "More (non-portable) fonts". Full Closure Support -------------------- This is a closure converted image. With full closure support, you can finally use recursive blocks like here: fac := [:n| n > 1 ifTrue:[n * (fac value: n-1)] ifFalse:[1]]. fac value: 5. and close over temps correctly, such as here: (1 to: 10) do:[:i| WorldState addDeferredUIMessage:[Transcript cr; show: i]]. A new Development Model ----------------------- This image is being developed using a new development model described at http://board.squeak.org/2009/07/02/a-new-community-development-model/ The image itself started as Squeak3.10.2-7179-basic.image. It was then updated from http://source.squeak.org/trunk. In order to keep track of ongoing development, simply hit the 'Load Code Updates' button.
