Cuis updated to #0250

A new release of Cuis is available at http://www.jvuletich.org/Cuis/Index.html . It includes some bugfixes and more cleanup. Biggest news is a lot of cleanup in the Text system. Gone are the ugly TextConstants pool and the old Paragraph class. TextStyle lost over half its instance variables and over 80% of its methods. I also added a TextEditor to the World menu that is not a Smalltalk Workspace and may be useful especially for end users. As usual, all the updates starting at #0001 are available separately, and described in http://www.jvuletich.org/Cuis/CategoriesAndChangeSets.txt . This could be useful for users of other Squeak images wanting some of the bug fixes and enhancements included in Cuis. Comments welcome. Cheers, Juan Vuletich

Apple approved WikiServer 1.4.4 for sale on the App store yesterday, as usual they have handed us another 50 USA promo codes, so if there are people on the list that would like one or two, please email me, not the list, a request. I note these are for USA itunes customers, but there are ways for people to create a new dummy itunes USA account with out supplying credit card information to redeem the promo code then install the app on your device for a month of free usage. font problems (again)

I am using Squeak 3.10.2 on Ubuntu 9.04 (Linux) I reported problems with fonts earlier. Andreas Raab told me how to set the font of my text (thanks Andreas Raab) which I have done. However I still have two problems: 1) I am setting color attributes to text which I see correctly. I am also modifying the display of some of the characters between 128 and 155 for use in displaying trees. However, I often do not see the changes I make to the characters and see instead the original accented characters for the characters I have changed (such as character 225). I have several times at this point perused the Internet for a while using Firefox. When I return I sometimes see that my special characters are now correctly displayed. Note this refers to text that I have already displayed on a workspace. Even though I am not redisplaying it the fact that I am switching from one X-windows window to another causes the correction to occur. Note also that in Ubunutu I have two completely different screens to choose from and I have Squeak running in one and Firefox running in the other. Only one is displayed at a time and the correction occurs when I switch from the screen containing Firefox and the screen containing Squeak. This has occurred three times now so it is partially repeatable. I do not know what I have to do on the Internet to cause this affect. I am assuming that X-windows needs some buffer flushed and Firefox is doing it but Squeak is not. That is there is a bug in Squeak (or Ubuntu or X-windows) somewhere. Any suggestions as to what the problem is? A fix? 2) I need a fixed font for displaying my trees so I used (TextStyle named: 'DefaultFixedTextStyle') fontOfPointSize: 11. The problem is this font is not quite fixed although it is better than the fonts I used previously. Is there a truly fixed font I can use? Regards, Ralph Boland

Using Squeak to learn about high-level programming environments?

Back in April (!) I subscribd to squeak-dev and squeak-nos to ask this one question. Lurking has taught me a lot, but the threads about the future of Squeak overwhelmed my brain and I plan to unsubscribe after I get some sort of answer. I'm interested in debugging, reflection, and virtualization. Fixing errors can be fun, and making changes at runtime is an addicting power. Mostly I've been studying implementations and learning concepts rather than doing any coding. Machine-language debuggers can be powerful (I've studied several) but they aren't abstract at all, so they are hard to understand and maintain. I'm looking for a system that is easy to understand and easy to make small incremental changes to. Smalltalk has always looked promising, since it's a high-level langauge that can describe most of its own runtime which includes programming tools. I still don't know which version is best for my purposes. Going from the beige Smalltalk-80 books and Inside Smalltalk, I've always assumed the original Smalltalk-80 code worked correctly, had decent high- level comments, and matched the comments. Is that really true? Anyway, it doesn't run on modern hardware afAIK and the limitations of the MVC- architecture window system quickly become apparent. An old version of Squeak might be Smalltalk-80 on modern hardware but it suffers from the same window-ssytem limitations. New versions of Squeak try to fix the window system but have made so many other changes. I find myself dealing with small "why isn't this working?" bugs I don't want to investigate, or the concepts are much harder to see. Also the classic programming tools like the system tracer and image shrinking have been neglected for a long time. Pharo and Cuis sound potentially useful. I still need to try them. What about one of the commercial Smalltalks? Or a different langauge? Except the language should have an environment ready to go, and there are a lot fewer of those. Thanks, -- Derek

I've got some ToolBuilder changes somewhere that allow for drag and drop between tree components. I needed this for moving namespaces around. I think they should be on http://www.squeaksource.com/ToolBuilder and IIRC they should be loadable from Package Universes. I've made REPLServer (Smallalk telnet server) pretty, with command line editing, history, online help, but nobody seems to be particularly interested. I find it useful now and then for when I break Morphic (usually when I try concurrent programming and forget about process priorities). Otherwise the rest of my stuff is a long way off. I'm making slow but constant progress; I find it difficult to get more than a couple of hours a week on it. I found that out when I fixed the StandardSystemFontsTest (System-bp. 131 in http://source.squeak.org/tests). To reproduce change the standardButtonFont and then open a browser. Cheers, Bernhard

Hi, I was wondering why the inbox at http://source.squeak.org/inbox/ was so empty ever since its inception, so I simply thought I'd go ahead and use it for what it seems to be intended for: uploading things that might be useful to someone. I've uploaded a patch to Morphic that doesn't do much, it just adds some entries to the top of the World menu that would otherwise be available through one more click (browser, workspace, ...). Under the hood, I have refactored the World menu creation a bit - mostly, I have extracted some methods. So if you, out there, believe this makes sense, I'd be happy to move the patch over to the trunk. :-) Best, Michael
