[Squeak 4.0] A Couple of Methods (PLEASE REVIEW)

So to avoid pasting the whole license into SystemDictionary>>condenseSources, I added SystemDictionary>>license, which just answers a ByteString containing the license agreement, and makes the change to #condenseSources a one-liner. Note that I pasted verbatim what Andreas sent me; I would like it if folks could make sure I have the right text there. Another advantage to having the license live in it's own method is, it's easy to change if the SFC wants last-minute changes. A third advantage (and this just makes me smile) is you can print: [ Smalltalk license. ] Which answers the ByteString containing the text of the license agreement. Place your bets on how long it'll take Andreas to come up with a one line method that transforms legalese into friendly LOLspeak:P Andreas recommended the following test case to me: Filein the attachment SystemDictionary-license.st, followed by the attachment SystemDictionary-condenseSources.st. Then do... [ Smalltalk condenseSources. ] Afterwords, make sure it worked with... [ Smalltalk allClassesAndTraits do:[:cls| cls compileAll]. ] If anyone can recommend other interesting test cases around this, please let me know. The changes and sources files are still fairly arcane to the Fancy New Guy:) -- Ron

Broken keystrokes in trunk

Hi. When I'm using a trunk image and press the End key, Squeak seems to think I've pressed the Page Down key. This is a problem for 3 of my keys: button acts like keycode end page down 4 page up unprintable character 11 page down page up 12 I got the keycode by running Sensor kbdTest. I noticed some earlier thread was printing events like: [keyDown '<Cmd-^Q>'] How do I see events like that? I don't really understand how the event system works at all, actually. If someone cared to explain where keyboard events and such come from and go, it would be nice -- Matthew Fulmer (a.k.a. Tapple)

I'll run for board

I wasn't planning on running for board this year, but if Jecel is willing to do it, busy as he is, I will too. I fell away from the squeak community pretty badly in 2009, due to leaving home, starting grad school, and moving to the Cobalt project. I am now one of the two lead programmers on Cobalt. Since November 2009, I have been working with Andreas to rebase cobalt from its legacy 3.8 image base to the current trunk image. I intend to complete that rebase and I would like for Cobalt to be a testbed to gain practical experience on how to package a complex application for loading into squeak. It's big enough and different enough that it would be a good stress test for Metacello, but not as deeply integrated as Etoys. Hopefully the experience can be useful for future mergers with Pharo, Cuis, or Etoys. I will not have much time to dedicate to squeak this next year. I would primarily like to serve as a Cobalt representative on the board, and to help the merge go smoothly. Regarding the release, I back Andreas and Randal fully. I'm sorry 3.11 didn't go so well and am grateful they were able to revive the community. Thanks guys for doing what I failed to do with 3.11: get people involved. -- Matthew Fulmer (a.k.a. Tapple)

Good people of Squeak, We need to have a license statement at the top of our sources file for the 4.0 release. I've been futsing with it without success. I've tried: 'foo'! 'foo'!! !'foo'! And a variety of varied nasty things happened when (to test) doing: -- Ron

Where is there a working Squeak VM?

Is there a downloadable _Squeak_ VM that can run the latest trunk image? If so, where I can download it? I'm out of town, using my old (Windows) computer with only the old Squeak VM installed. I needed to boot up a recent closures Squeak image but of course I couldn't. So I found myself going out to the _Pharo_ download page to download a VM to run Squeak. I then had to rename the Windows executable from pharo.exe to squeak.exe since that's how my file-associations are set up. Oh, and the Pharo splash page is used unless you take care to keep the old splash bmp. Frankly, this is all seriously cheesey. Please, if we haven't already, can we make available a separately downloadable VM for *Squeak*. I would even suggest that we make it downloadable from squeak.org. Who is in charge of this? Sorry I didn't get to this earlier in the day. Other stuff. Chris M. couldn't find the right VM. He looked on the downloads page, and didn't find the SqueakVM link on the homepage. I think that means I should go through those 15 odd VM links on the downloads page and point them to the right VMs if I can. I imagine we want all the links to point to the full closure VM, which is backward compatible to 3.8, so it's all good. A link has been added to squeakvm.org, so the Mac VMs can be found easily. Cool, Dave. I imagine the download packages for Linux, Windows, and Mac can be left for now, as they come with an image that works. The idea of putting all three VMs in a package is probably a good one, but it seems to me we can delay that for now until new packages need to be created. A link from the Latest Development section squeakvm.org looks like a good idea, so I'll add one. I don't have access to ftp.squeak.org, but perhaps somebody who does could add a link to squeakvm.org there. Soooo... in total: 1. Dave has updated squeakvm.org. 2. I need to change links to VMs on the download page, and add a link from the Latest Development section to squeakvm.org. 3. As some people go straight to ftp.squeak.org, perhaps somebody could add a link to squeakvm.org from there. I think that's the big picture. With these changes is should be much easier to reach for a VM while reaching for a Trunk image. Chris
