Hi folks. Sorry for the cross post this time, but I guess it is worth. In Pharo we were trying to get a way to know the amount of memory (bytes) that an objects is occupying in RAM memory. For such purpose, Adrian posposed the following method: Object>>sizeInMemory "Returns the number of bytes used by this object in memory (including its header)" | headerSize instanceSize | headerSize := (self class indexIfCompact > 0 ifTrue: [ 4 ] ifFalse: [ 8 ]). instanceSize := (self class isVariable ifFalse: [ self class instSize * Smalltalk wordSize ] ifTrue: [ (self basicSize * (self class isBytes ifTrue: [ 1 ] ifFalse: [ Smalltalk wordSize ])) ]). ^ headerSize + instanceSize Do you think this is correct for all cases? Is there a way to know this but from the VM side also ? how ? I really need it from the VM side :( but I have no idea how to do it. Vm crash from FileList

In the trunk image with latest updates installed (10026) the VM crashes when clicking through a number of jpg image files in the FileList. Crash dump attached... Hans <<crash.dmp>>

[Urgent][4.1.1] Squeak screen shot and backgrounds / display of pictures

Hello Bert started the thread 'a little press coverage'. Actually the coverage is pretty good I think. http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2010-April/149615.ht… Then Ian pointed out that we need a good screen shot and referred to an example on his blog. http://mecenia.blogspot.com/2010/04/history-of-squeak-in-pictures.html It is just by now that I realized that there is a File List browser open on that screen shot showing a bitmap (BMP) file. What is displayed in the content windows are the codes, i.e. the picture is not displayed. In other threads ** in the recent days Steve Wessels was working on a background chooser (posted to the inbox, then the issue of the Menu Registry came up). In fact the regular file list browser includes a button 'background'. It is however very difficult to choose a background with it if you do not see the picture. ** For example here http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/pipermail/squeak-dev/2010-April/149538.ht… and http://squeak.preeminent.org/ (Steve's background chooser has more options like 'center' / 'Tile' and he is working on an updated version) As Smalltalk is the grand-daddy of graphical user interfaces it strikes me with horror that after 30 years I do not see a picture if I browse through directories with the main file explorer tool. I think this needs a fix ASAP if we want to expose Squeak to a wider audience. The quick fix for the time being is not to expose this deficiency in a screen shot. A image morph would be better. I see the necessity for a little maintenance release 4.1.1 which fixes this and similar problems. This 4.1.1. could as well include the menu registry solution (either pragma or MenuSpec) and some other things e.g. 'Right-click on workspace stops functioning' What do other's think about this issue? Would it be an option to go for a 4.1.1. release within a few days? Maybe next Saturday? These are not really difficult things to fix. More difficult things might be unearthed later and that would call for a 4.1.2 two weeks later..... Kind regards Hannes

What is the plan for 4.2?

Dear all, my impression is that we've got a gorgeous release with lots of good things under and above the hood. So far, I'm happy. :-) But there's going to be a Squeak 4.2, right? Now what's going to happen to make it happen? What things are intended? Is there even a consistent overall idea of what should be achieved for 4.2? Is there any idea? A "vision", so to speak? I can sense some things, I'd like to have some things. If you ask me, personally, I'd love to see Squeak 4.2 as the best documented Smalltalk out there. I'd also like to see more native GUI support, a JIT compiler, and transparent multicore exploitation. Anyway, I'd like to see more tests, and a green bar. Eventually, I'd really really love to have a nice and high-level VM implementation (both like and unlike PyPy). But that's probably for 6.0 or so. Now is the time. Best, Michael

It was very easy to add "channel tags" to the YT channel. Embarrassing, really. The SMS should be easier to find now. When the written tutorials and the HelpSystem start to come together, I'll start making videos and putting them on the SMS http://www.youtube.com/user/gandysmedicineshow They won't end with the stTV logo but with the Squeak mouse, mention of the HelpSystem, and an author's credit. There are lots of things we can do with the files and different means of delivery. We can turn those ideas over between now and 4.2. At that time, we can make a space on the Documentation section of squeak.org to collect all known repositories of videos. Chris
