[ANN] SqueakSSL - a platform interface for SSL/TLS

Folks - Since the weekend is over I've decided to release what I got so far and consequently I'm happy to announce the availability of a new interface to the platform SSL/TLS facilities for Squeak. SqueakSSL is a plugin-based approach which utilizes the platform implementation; currently the SCHANNEL SSPI on Windows and OpenSSL on Unix. To use SqueakSSL you need the following pieces: 1) The plugin for your platform. For Windows, you can download the plugin from http://squeakvm.org/win32/release/SqueakSSL.zip For Unix you'll have to compile your own; I'm attaching the relevant part of the platforms tree. Mac support is currently not provided but the OpenSSL based version can probably be adapted for Macs. 2) The SqueakSSL source code and tests. All of this can be found at http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakSSL.html You need SqueakSSL-Core for the code and SqueakSSL-Tests for the unit tests (SqueakSSL-Plugin is the plugin source which you don't need and which we'll probably push into VMMaker). Once you've downloaded and installed everything correctly, you should be able to try SqueakSSL via the google example, which makes a query to encrypted.google.com: SqueakSSL google: 'Squeak'. If the query fails your plugin is probably not installed correctly (it seems unlikely that Google's cert has an issue :-) 3) For further tests (incl. the unit tests) you will need to provide a server certificate that can be used by SqueakSSL. On Unix you can do that using the openssl command line tools and once you've generated your cert, you can tell SqueakSSLTest to use the cert. On Windows the process is a bit more involved - you need to have a valid cert AND have it installed in the local certificate store (a description can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816794 but make sure you install it in your *user* account not the computer account). Once you have the cert installed, you can run the unit tests which should now succeed. Obviously, this is an early release and there's plenty of work that remains to be done, so help is welcome. However, it is starting to become useful and consequently I'm intending to update WebServer and WebClient soon for HTTPS support. Cheers, - Andreas

how to write to stdOut and stdErr under Cog

I am developing a simple "CommandLineProcessor" facade for easily transferring command-line arguments simply as block-arguments, so you can write smalltalk scripts in vi: CommandLineProcessor do: [ : arg1 : arg2 : arg3 | "args come in as Strings" ... ] and also for directing Notifications and Warnings messages to stdOut, and Errors to stdErr. It relies on OSProcess to write to stdOut and stdErr for this. However, ever since switching to Cog, writing to these streams does not seem to redirect out to Linux.. I don't know whether writing to these streams makes me Linux-dependent, but it really is nice to be able to write Linux scripts that employ Squeak in the back-end, but operate normally like other shell programs in the terminal window and with redirecting output, etc. - Chris

Hello Is somebody use Cryptography for RSA with SHA1 digital signature? I try do same result as I hava in java programm I have rsa private key as smalltalk object. It has same values as java private key object. But code privateKey v15SignMessage: message asByteArray . returns me wrong result. Its differ from java working test

Help is now able to define where subbooks are placed

Hi Enrico, found the time this evening to integrate your idea that custom help books should be able to define where subbooks should be placed/displayed: #pages ^(firstPage MyAppSubTutorial secondPage thirdPage) Just update your Squeak image to #10565 and you dont need to workaround this problem using a custom builder anymore. It is now also mentioned in the help systems help itself. See chapter "STEP 7 - TIPS AND TRICKS". I've also opened an issue together with the changeset for Pharo 1.2 so that it will be integrated in one of the next pharo updates. http://code.google.com/p/pharo/issues/detail?id=3022 Thanks for the idea and initial code! Multiple finalizers per single object

Hello, i'd like to raise this subject once more, because i don't like it (or don't understand?). In all scenarios, where i met the need to use finalization, a single finalizer is sufficient. Moreover, there is always a single object who controls a weak reference, and it never leaks it out, to prevent the case, when some other object may obtain a strong reference on it, making it permanently held in object memory. Multiple different finalizers for single object, from design point of view, means that you having two different, not related frameworks, which using same object, and want to do something when it dies. A scenario, where its possible and userful, still don't comes into my mind. In contrary, whenever i see a use of finalizers, its in most cases about graceful control over external resource, such as: - file - socket - external memory and i really don't see how multiple finalizers per single resource could do any good. Suppose one finalizer closing a file handle, while another one flushing it buffer cache. Now, how you going to ensure, that one finalizer will execute first, before another one? And what if third framework comes into play and wants to add another finalizer on top of that, which should do something in the middle between flushing a cache and closing file handle? >From the above, the only conclusion can be made: use a single finalizer, and put all logic & operation ordering into it. And also, prevent leakage of object pointer (such as file handle) outside of your model, otherwise it may cause harm. That's why i think a current WeakRegistry model provoking bad design practices. I think a better behavior would be to raise an error, if something wants to register finalizer twice for a single object. -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.
