I'd imagine you're thinking about #ensureCloseSema in QuickTimeAudio>>#openMovieFromURI:? It's a rather conspicuous #critical: block. If you remove that and then delete SophieQuickTimeMovieViaPlugin, then the player you've created in Morphic will play find. I've done it. Execute this in your image: Smalltalk listLoadedModules and tell me if you see the QuickTime plugin? Hmmm... QuickTime.framework, Carbon.framework, SurfacePlugin...nope, not here. You'll see it listed in the Sophie Dev image, though. I think the QuickTime plugin signals that Semaphore in #ensureCloseSema for the sake of timing. All the QT plugin does is signal when a frame is complete and ready to go. In SqueakMovieMorph you set the frame rate automatically to 30 ms. It seems to me the answer to your question depends on what kind of timing mechanism you want for your movie player. Sophie is a ****ing layered creation. It's extremely professional. I'd be happy if you ripped everything out that you can to distill a simple player, so that I can take that and compare it with Sophie to better understand its onion skins. Chris

Unicode strings, benchmarks

Hi Squeakers, I already extended String with TwoByteString and did a "scaling" with auto conversion to wider string when a wider character is put into a string. So far so good and this already works in Aida/Web. I also did a bit better UTF8 conversion but is only 25-80% faster that existing one in UTF8TextConverter. To prepare for even better results, I made a benchmark, which measure conversion time for English, French, Slovenian, Russian and Chinese 2500 characters long text. It measure 100 conversions which accumulates to 250K characters of text. Here are results in VW, Squeak with old UTF8 converter and a new one: VW old new english 30 313 248 ByteString, pure ASCII french 32 323 251 ByteString, ISO8859-1 (Latin 1) slovenian 48 578 480 TwoByteString Latin 2 russian 112 1306 720 TwoByteString Cyrillic chinese 107 1544 3825 TwoByteString Notice an exceptional 10x VW performance comparing to Squeak, and they do all encodings in plain Smalltalk! No primitives! So how come that Squeak is so slow here? Above benchmark was done on Squeak 3.9 on Suse Linux 10.1, P3.2GHz. hi, loading codetalk from potsdam now fails with Error: The spelling dictionary cannot be downloaded from <http://www.lukas-renggli.ch/smalltalk/rb-spelling.dat>. I think this is due to recent changes in RB (which codetalk loads) http://www.mail-archive.com/pharo-project@lists.gforge.inria.fr/msg24201.ht… Any suggestions? [4.2] Inbox status

I went through Squeak's Inbox today and cleared out some of my own old stuff and reviewed some of the contributions from others. I encourage other core developers to make a similar final pass on the Inbox. Bottom line: Unless I've overlooked some final crucial fix, I don't intend to integrate any of the remaining Inbox items into 4.2. Everything I looked at were "enhancements" which can be lobbied-for and integrated into 4.3. 4.2 will not be a perfect release, but our development does not stop. My focus at this time is on getting it out the door so we will have a new baseline and can start talking about things in the context of "4.3". - Chris
