CogVM binaries as per VMMaker.oscog-eem.128/r2496 Fix regression in object-as-method/cannot-interpret for single and polymorphic inline cache misses (lookup:for:methodAndErrorSelectorInto:). Fix formatting bugette in context printing. This fixes a regression in objects-as-methods which Nicholas was suffering from as a crash during Run Coverage in the Test Runner. -- best, Eliot

By "this", I meant the consequence of my error (expected "Error: Foo needs a method for size", got a hung image), and the effort required to find its cause. I agree with Eliot's suggestion, that SequenceableCollection>>size should raise an error. > You should not instantiate an abstract class. To follow that advice, I'd need a way to find out which classes were abstract, and when I'd implemented enough methods to stop them being abstract. That seems to be a black art in Smalltalk. There are two ways I could have written this. One is to define a subclass of Collection, and use the built-in collect:, inject:into: and so on. The other is to subclass Object, and define the iterators that I was going to use. Which approach is more common? Rodney

Dear list I wanted an array that lazily initialized elements 1 to n when you asked for the nth one. So I ran something like: SequenceableCollection variableSubclass #Foo ... When I started a workspace, and tried Foo new: 10, my image hung. Eventually, I found the problem. The workspace tried to print the answered instance, which resulted in it being sent a do: message to print its elements. This ran the method SequenceableCollection>>do: aBlock 1 to: self size do: [:index | aBlock value: (self at: index)] which ran Collection>>size | tally | tally := 0. self do: [:each | tally := tally + 1]. ^ tally which sent do:, which sent size, which ... Is this considered a bug, or a learning experience for new players? ArrayedCollection avoids it by restoring the primitive method for size. Rodney

Stdb MySQL Protocol Driver update in squeaksource

A couple of updates to the Stdb* projects in SqueakSource. Project StdbMysqlProtocol: There is a new version of the protocol driver that can now handle authentication for MySQL users with old style (short hash) passwords. It handles the fallback silently during the handshake. This was an issue reported by Andreas for the previous version of the driver package. Project StdbMysqlImpl : There is a new version of the Stdb API implementation for MySQL. This one has some test infrastructure fixes, and consolidates the use of test credentials so that a single username/password combination is used for all tests. The packages were tested with MySQL 5.0.67 community edition under Mac OS X. Best, Anindya

Now available: a database conectivity API and its MySQL implementation

I am extremely pleased to offer to the community a generic Smalltalk API for database connectivity API, along with a MySQL implementation written from ground up. Think of JDBC and DBI like interfaces in other languages and environments, and this one offers abstract facilities like connection, prepared statement, resultset, row, metdata and so on for the application. The API implementation uses driver delegates, and insulates the applications from the driver specific interfaces. As of now, a MySQL implementation is available, with other databases engine supports in the future plans. The API supports server side prepared statements and cursor based fetch implemented in the MySQL driver. The implementation is currently available in 3 parts: 1) StdbCore project: This is primarily the API definitions and the delegation logic URL: http://www.squeaksource.com/StdbCore.html 2) StdbMysqlImpl project: This is the MySQL implementation of the StdbCore API URL: http://www.squeaksource.com/StdbMysqlImpl.html 3) StdbMysqlProtocol project: This is the underlying MySQL protocol driver, and used by the MySQL API implementation URL: http://www.squeaksource.com/StdbMysqlProtocol.html There is a package load ordering dependency (documented in the MySQL implementation project). Please load the core and the protocol driver packages first, before you load the implementation package. Combined, the packages has around 200 tests (most of them in the protocol driver and the API implementation) and are running green on Pharo 1.1.1 one click, Squeak 4.2 one click, Squeak 3.10 (with Seaside 2-8-573 dev image) under Mac OS X 10.5.8 with MySQL server 5.0.67. This was in the making for some time; and I feel it is time to share it with the community. I will continue to post more documentation and code snippets in the project page Wiki sections.
