Hi-- Having established my consultancy in Amsterdam, I'm ready to return to the Squeak board this year. I would like to lead the release of Squeak 5, using the Spoon technology[1,2]. Now that I live in Europe and go to European gatherings, I look forward to strengthening Squeak's ties to ESUG and other European developers. Fixing around GetText

Sorry if I missed the answer to this -- Does anyone know the proper upgrade from legacy locale initialization code as: NaturalLanguageTranslator localeID: (LocaleID isoString: 'nl') which now blows up our image build with NaturalLanguageTranslator DNU #cachedTranslations since GetText was put in the trunk. Is InternalTranslator the equivalent of NaturalLanguageTranslator?

ContextS2 Updates

Because it's AOSD, I sat down and optimized ContextS2 somewhat (layered method executions should be around 3x faster than before ... which is still around 80x slower than non-layered methods on Cog). I also fixed the tests on Pharo 1.4 So, ContextS2 should now run from Squeak 4.2 onwards and on Pharo 1.4 If you use it and find problems, please report bugs! Enjoy, Tim

[GSoC] Call for students

Dear Students, Now it is your turn! You will have to register in our website first [1], put there some information, show interest for the projects and contact the project mentors. After the registration step you will get all the mentors information in order to contact them. By pressing the button on the project, you will show your interest. This is not something formal yet. Of course you can propose your own project too. In this case write a proposal in a format other projects have and send it to admins (see the email on the bottom). Our mentors will vote for the most interesting projects and in the middle of the voting Google will tell us, how many projects will actually be funded. Voting will happen in April, with final results expected at the end of April. At that time you will finally know if you are accepted or not. Of course, there can be many students interested per project. This means that interest for this project is high, but on the other side a chance that you will be chosen is lower. It is up to you to convince a mentor that you are the best! Note also that the Ideas page is deprecated. On ideas page just the project ideas were collected. Now, we are preparing the real projects. So, please from now on always refer to this link for the projects: http://gsoc2012.esug.org/projects So, the initial steps are: 1. Register on our special Smalltalk GSoC website (with your Google account!): http://gsoc2012.esug.org/admin?view=loginGoogle 2. (cc to squeak-dev) The Squeak Chronology system has limited ability to deal with time zone offsets, which are not static offsets but vary as a function of time for any given time zone. The problem you are seeing here is not a single bug, it is one of many symptoms of this limited implementation. See TimeZoneDatabase on SqueakSource for one way to address this: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1076 Chronos is another implementation: http://chronos-st.org/ The current implementation with fixed offsets is simple and fast, so you may consider the limited implementation to be either a bug or a feature depending on your use case ;) Dave
