[GSoC] Call for students

Dear Students, Now it is your turn! You will have to register in our website first [1], put there some information, show interest for the projects and contact the project mentors. After the registration step you will get all the mentors information in order to contact them. By pressing the button on the project, you will show your interest. This is not something formal yet. Of course you can propose your own project too. In this case write a proposal in a format other projects have and send it to admins (see the email on the bottom). Our mentors will vote for the most interesting projects and in the middle of the voting Google will tell us, how many projects will actually be funded. Voting will happen in May, with final results expected at the end of May. At that time you will finally know if you are accepted or not. Of course, there can be many students interested per project. This means that interest for this project is high, but on the other side a chance that you will be chosen is lower. It is up to you to convince a mentor that you are the best! Note also that the Ideas page is deprecated. On ideas page just the project ideas were collected. Now, we are preparing the real projects. TraitResource the cause of many Trait test failures

There's an AttemptToWriteReadOnlyGlobal in TestResource >> #setUp, which is a bit strange, given that #setUp is supposed to set up this read only global in the first place. It looks like TraitResource uses its createdClassesAndTraits instvar to remember what to remove... only it never actually stores any of t1..t6 or c1..c8 in that instvar. So I ripped out the instvar and replaced the createdClassesAndTraits method with one that returns those traits and classes that aren't nil. That reveals that when the trait's created, computation eventually ends up in Environments >> #at:put:. That calls a block with this: binding := aSymbol => anObject. contents add: binding. exports bind: binding and it's in #bind: that the AttemptToWriteReadOnlyGlobal is signalled. And indeed, if we call the Environment in which we're working env, ((env exports instVarNamed: 'namespaces') at: #T1) = AnObsoleteT1. And now I'm stuck. A BindingPolicy provides no means of removing a binding (and I don't even know if that makes sense). frank PS There is a lot of cruft in the TraitsTestCase, duplicating some of TraitsResource. Cleaning that out doesn't make the problem worse, but I haven't submitted a decrufting fix because I don't want to add noise.)

Problem with SerialPort and Cog

This example don't work with Cog 4.0.2701 in a iMac OSX 10.8.3: |p s| p := SerialPort new. p baudRate: 115200. p openPort: '/dev/cu.usbmodem1a21'. 1 to: 5 do:[:i| s := p readString. Transcript show: 'i=', i asString, '=>', s, '<=';cr. (Delay forSeconds: 1) wait. i=1 ifTrue:[p nextPutAll: 'M105', String lf.] ]. p close. the same code works ok with the Squeak 4.2.5beta1U, this is connected to an Arduino Mega using only a USB cable.

People of Squeak kingdom. I plan to do a State of Squeak presentation in URN Rosario 22/5/13. So I welcome feedback of issues to talk about. Obviously the first question is: What is a Squeak? 1. A program running the last 40 years on different OS and all class of computers. 2. A way to do things which you can¹t do in any other ³Language² 3.
