Kom or Swazoo?

Installing Seaside 3.1.1 into Squeak does not install a necessary WAServerAdaptor subclass. Zinc is Pharo only right? So I guess my choices are Kom or Swazoo? I need to research how to install either but does anyone know whether either has an inherent advantage over the other? What are their differences? Thanks. PS -- During my brief investigation so far I noticed -- of the 7 Smalltalk's listed at http://www.seaside.st/download, the only one which is a broken link is Squeak..

Proposing class Category README or HOWTO for easy access to documentation within the system

Hi All, Stefan Ducasse replied to me regarding my synapsis of the CMakeVMaker code. Igor created all the logic of the CMakeGenerator but I guess that he did not add good class comments so I thought that it would be great if you can add the comment to a class so that it is not lost. Information external to classes is often lost. And I agree with him. In Linux/Open Source world, are the conventions of README and HOWTO. I propose that Squeak adopt two class categories for developers to add easy access to documentation on subsystems in the README category and quick howto_foo_a_bar classes in the HOWTO category. I know we have the web, and there is a Help system, but I find the Help system a bit clunky to use and breaking from Squeak environment to Web for information breaks the flow. A recent example of where this proposal would come in handy is the recent discussion about reviving Tweak for Squeak 4.5/4.6. The time investment to get up to speed is vastly increased by having to hunt for information. just my .02 cheers. tty

PNGReadWriter bug?

Yet again my mighty Scratch related Nemesis is biting at my ankles. I’m more than a little puzzled how a single, simple file can cause so much trouble, but there y’go. Life. In an old image - the one Scratch is originally built in - loading the attached ‘banana.png' produces a 32bpp image where the transparent outer area is made of pixels with a value of 0. Autocorrect wanted to make the ‘pixies’ which would be so much more attractive, but it is what it is, so ‘pixels’ will have to do. The bits are processed in PNGReadWrite>processNonInterlaced and are written to the actual Form via copyPixelsRGBA: In a 4.5 image, the same file (yes, made sure of that) is processed via the PNGReadWriter code as above and results in outer area (supposedly transparent) pixels with value 16rFFFFFF. Which aint’ really transparent. So far as I can tell the likely change that is causing the difference is in PNGReadWriter>copyPixelsRGBA: which dates back to 2004, so clearly not a lot of files manage to trigger any obvious issue. It looks like the chief difference is that the old code used 'Form paint’ combination rule instead of the new code’s Form over rule - but simply changing that makes no difference to the result, so that shows how well I’m doing with this. So maybe it is the rgbaDecoderMapForDepth: that is at fault? If anyone actually has a decent understanding of the whole PNG related stuff, do tell. There is now a catalog entry for installing Seaside 3.1.1 into Squeak 4.5. I used this as the script for the entry. I only tested that it loads without incident, nothing else. Tweak in Squeak4.5

I wanted to test if my new handling (handleSignal:) was Tweak compatible. But, http://www.squeaksource.com/TweakCore is not currently loading in Squeak4.5 due to several uncompatible changes: - Tweak requires 'allow block argument assignement' preference to be true, that's the first thing which should be mentionned on the squeaksource page loading instructions. - Tweak is subclassing Compiler, but the Compiler changed (Introduction of CompilationCue by Colin) - Tweak is extending MultiDisplayScanner, but this class vanished (It should now be BltDisplayScanner). - Tweak is using this weird literal syntax that has been retracted: (self flag: #1). should be (self flag: 1) instead. Is there any interest in upgrading Tweak to latest trunk? If yes, see attachments for a quick fix of last 3 points (Tweak-Compiler and Tweak-Costume) I also noticed that I get many packages marked dirty because the fields changed. Is it normal?

Yes. And, ever since Yoshiki showed it in 2006 I have been itching to explore Kedama. I would love if that could work in a modern trunk image too, does anyone know how? What could be more fun than exploring emergence with a Squeak-based particle simulator at 30K feet?
