Squeak Trunk V3 Update Stream

This project provides an update stream that, starting with a Squeak 4.6 release image, produces an up-to-date trunk level image that can be run with either a Cog/Stack or classic interpreter VM. The resulting image uses the traditional V3 object memory format, and therefore does not support Spur enhancements (immediate characters and floats, enhanced memory management, etc). It does however run most Squeak functionality exactly like Squeak trunk on Spur. I put an update on the swiki here: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6592 The trunk V3 image may be useful for performance comparisons related to V3/Spur/Cog/Sista variants. Note, this is a long-term update for a project that I did not intend to keep alive this long. I had originally intended to maintain the V3 update stream or one Squeak release cycle, but it has turned out to be useful for keeping the classic interpreter VM updated with respect to VM primitives, and has been something of a learning experience for me to keep up with the Context refactorings, Compiler and Kernel changes, and Sista bytecodes. So for better or worse, the V3 trunk stream is still alive, and I figured that it is worth a mention on the squeak-dev list :-) Dave

Squeak-trunk builds still broken

Hi all, Our trunk builds are still broken, at the moment because of a reproducible MNU on CI ([1] or [2]). I'm not sure if this is caused by connectivity problems, it'd be great if someone could look into it. We are soliciting quality contributions for the regular Poster Session of <Programming> (submissions due March 4th). The Poster Session aims at showcasing very recent or ongoing work, clarifying problem statements, vetting solutions, or identifying evaluation methods in an interactive way. It will offer an excellent opportunity for authors to receive feedback from the <Programming> community and encourage one-to-one and small group discussions on a technical topic. Students are especially encouraged to submit their ongoing work and to introduce it to peer researchers. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on the conference Web site. The <Programming> Posters track will take place on Tuesday, April 10th and will be organized jointly with the ACM Student Research Competition Poster track, thus fostering interactions between all presenters and attendees. Poster author(s) are required to attend the scheduled poster session, so that they can discuss their work with conference attendees. Poster Submission Guidelines: Posters will be evaluated based on their contribution and relevance to <Programming>. Instructions for updating trunk undate config

This one I'm going to need some help on, having never done this before (obviously). ----- When and How to change the trunk update configuration: * When you are adding a new package to trunk, update the configuration with the new package (just because a package is in the repository does not mean it is loaded) * When you are removing a package from trunk, update the configuration to remove the package (and follow instructions for removing the package) * When methods are moved from one package to another - primarily when they are used in the update logic - then create an update with the package where the method is removed and where the method is added in the same update configuration * When you need to ensure a preamble or postscript script is run for a package, include the version in a new configuration (otherwise it could be skipped - trunk only loads the latest version of a package if specific versions are not called out in the update configuration) * If you need to do very intricate, step by step surgery on the internals of Squeak itself, such as converting how contexts work, you should use a series of update configurations to ensure step by step applications of the packages so the trunk update is successful To perform the modify the update configuration: 1. Update squeak. 2. Open the trunk package 3. Select the 'update' package, find the last update commit, and "Browse" it (with the button) 4. In the MCConfigurationBrowser, press the "Update" button and choose "update all from image" 5. If you need to add a new package, press the "Add" button and chose the package to add (it needs to be in your image with the right version to add it) 6. If you need to remove a package, select the package and press "Remove" 7. If you packages are updating that have dependencies between each other (say, adding an abstract class to one package, and a subclass of that abstract class in another package), then you will need to make sure those packages are in the right order. In this case, find the package with the subclass, and make sure it is after the abstract classes package. Do this by selecting one package and pressing the "Up" and "Down" keys until the packages are in the right order 8. Finally, save the package back to Trunk, and test out the update stream to ensure it works. ----- Thanks, cbc

ANN: TiledMaps library - OpenStreetMaps, Bing Maps, Thunderforest maps and so on

Hi all, Today I've been hacking on a thing called TiledMaps: http://squeaksource.com/TiledMaps.html The package can load and cache static, prerendered map tiles from a variety of sources including OpenStreetMaps, Bing Maps, and so on. It includes a geocoder query service which maps free-text queries to regions of the planet's surface. The service can be backed by the Nominatim service (associated with OpenStreetMaps), the Bing geocoder, the Google geocoder, and so on. Selection of tilesets is independent of selection of geocoder, so you can mix and match. The package includes a "slippy map" morph called TiledMapMorph, that allows interaction with a map using the mouse. It includes a few hooks for EToys, too, so EToys scripting of the map is possible. You can get one of your own from https://www.bingmapsportal.com/. Included in the package are a few other tile sources and geocoders that need API keys as well - you'll need to check the websites and terms&conditions for each service you want to use. PPS. In particular, Google's terms&conditions explicitly forbid downloading map tiles without going through their Javascript API. The package honours this restriction.
