Block temporaries are now standard ANSI Smalltalk, but was not in the original Smalltalk-80 nor yet in Squeak. You can probably convert all those methods by pulling the temporaries up to the method level, i.e.
| u v | aNumber isComplex ifFrue: [u := ...snip...

I've put it (as arithmetic.st still) in the incoming dir at st.cs.uiuc.edu with a comment at the top.
It files in OK now, but doesn't alter the existing number classes. As a result, matrix mult works fine, but anything involving existing classes dies a death.
