Hi all
Here is a list of question I have about the squeak license and the answers I think. I know that it seems naive, silly.... still I would like to have answers to these questions.
- Can I distribute freely applications in Squeak? yes
- Do I have to pay anything for runtime? no
- What is my responsibility if the user gets damaged by using my software using MIT for my code, the user takes the risks to use my software
- What is my responsibility as a distributor of Squeak if the user gets damaged by using Squeak? ???
- Can I distribute a Squeak image with my code loaded? yes
- Can I distribute the code of my application? yes
- Should I include the Squeak-L license for my code? no - Can I change the license of Squeak when I distribute my code? no
- Can I modify the Squeak distribution? yes
- Can I modify the squeak distribution and distribute my own version? yes
- Can I use any license I want for my code? yes
- Do I have to make my code under the Squeak license? no
- Do I have to give back the fixes I do in the Squeak distribution? yes
- Can I sell my application? yes
- Can Apple attack me because I'm developing in Squeak? no

I'd say zero - look at all the disclaimers in the SqueakL. Unless of course the user can prove neglect or something.

Exactly! But in the real world there is *nothing* you can do that will keep a user from suing you anyway. And they might decide to sue Apple and in that case you agreed to pay for Apple's legal expenses (this is the part the scared the Debian folks). The user might decide to sue the USA government or Woody Allen because of some problem they had with Squeak. You can't prevent it. Of course, in the latter two cases it wouldn't be your problem, only in the first two.
But to reinforce what Cees said: the license clearly states that neither you nor Apple can be held reponsible for anything that happens to someone who gets Squeak from you.

I thought that the license on Apple's fonts was very restrictive (perhaps like GNU general), and that you have to rid your image of Apples' fonts if you want to do anything commercial.

Well, that is not what the license says - it just says that you can use the Apple fonts only in the context of Squeak.
And that clause was written before it was firmly established (at least in US law) that bitmapped fonts are not copyrightable works anyway.

Sorry to sound like a troll, but is that true even if your customer lives in Syria, Iran and all the other countries that are under US export regulations? Are you even allowed to use Squeak in these countries?
Sure. The license doesn't say anything about that. It's the "exporter" that is at risk. Luckily, these days, simply offering something on a website for download doesn't seem to be regarded as exporting anymore. That clause is mostly a paper tiger.
