Hi Guys...
[snip]
Volunteers?
I want to postulate myself to be the maintainer (or one of the maintainers) of eToys and to be the "assembler" (or one of the assemblers) of the Full- Image.
eToys:
The initial set of goals I want to push in eToys are the followings:
- Synchronize the Squeakland's image with the "big" one. The eToys in Squeakland's image evolved and these changes are not in the big image.
- Make eToys translatable with Babel. It means to remove the current translation mechanism and replace it by Babel.
- Coordinate the work with "Squeaklanders" to keep the 2 versions synchronized.
- Expand eToys to cover more morphs and more functionality. -- Example: InternalThreadNavigatorMorph has to be scriptable from eToys to create active essays with complex navigation flows, etc. -- All the multimedia morphs has to be fully scriptable from eToys.
MediaSqueak (aka Full-Image):
For the Full-Image the goal is to make this distribution the "MediaSqueak". The full image has to include all the media stuff available in SM (Connectors, More graphics files support, Video Processing, TTF, etc). Also the full image has to include all the languages available for Babel and some good initial look&feel.
Since SqC moves away we're working to have less in the image I think we need somebody that can take care of giving more in the full-image.
What can I offer:
Since January/2004 (or before) I'll have a full-time job with Squeak working with the folks from LinEx project. Just now we're using a customized 3.5 based image (The Small-Land's one).
My plan is to combine these 2 projects and build the Small-Land image on top of the full one.
I'd like to hear your opinions...
Cheers,

This all sounds great to me.

Sidenote: Don't you think Squeakland and Smallland can both be hosted on top of "Full" (or perhaps even yet another level up above Full)? It seems such a waste that Squeakland today is more or less a fork.
MediaSqueak (aka Full-Image):

Yes, or depending on what we want "Full" to be - we might even want to have these levels (I am just rambling here so don't get upset):
Basic - you know, as little you need to still be able to work and get more. :) Full - a pretty packed distro but still without a special focus. Media - adds lots of packages to Full turning it into a multimedia focused distro.
Anyway, I just mentioned this. Perhaps it is smarter to simply have Basic/Full. Not sure.

As I said - the community would be pretty "daft" not to give you this trust. IMHO of course. You have the knowledge and the enthusisasm for sure.

Small-Land image will be build on top of the full/media image.
I'm not the best to talk about this but I think Squeakland's image is a different history, it's supposed this image has to be installed as a plugin in the browsers and the size could be critic.
If I understood correctly the Squeakland image is the minimum posible image to run eToys.
MediaSqueak (aka Full-Image):

I think this could be an option if we have a clear idea of what "full" means.
We have a "goal" for the media image, it has to be the Dynabook of XXI century. But I don't know what the full (without the media part) is.
Probably we can go with full=media as the first approach and delay this decision for 3.8 (or 4.1 ;))

Glad to hear it! Thanks.

I guess there are a couple of aspects to being in charge of the Full Image:
1. Deciding which packages should be part of the Full release. There are a number of things which would be good to add (Connectors, etc.), and occasionally something needs to be removed (such as PWS). These would of course stay as packages on SqueakMap and would be added to the "Upgrade to Full" script, but would not be added to the update stream. But they would be in the Full image download for 3.7 and future releases.
2. Working on the appearance and runtime content of the Full release image itself (as opposed to the packages/source code). For example, right now, the 3.6 final release looks a lot like the 3.4 & 3.2 releases, except for some updates to the Welcome window. Lots of other things could be updated/improved, such as the projects which appear in Worlds of Squeak, etc. I didn't have much time to work on this myself, since I was more focused on maintaining the update stream.
So, if you want to take responsibility for #2, that would be great. And you could also be in charge of #1 if you'd like, although this would involve more coordination with the Guides & the community when deciding which packages should be in or out.
As you said in another message, I think keeping Full the same as the Media release is a good idea for now.

I full agree. IMO, this is part of the job of the full-image maintainer.
The idea is that the community participates in the discussion but the final decision is made by the maintainer.
If the community doesn't like the final decisions, the maintainer can be fired but while the maintainer is in charge he/she has the last word.
I think this is the only way to decide and do something.

I thinks the best way is to create another area... something like "Squeak Content & Look".
So, if you want to take responsibility for #2, that would be great.
I can be also the maintainer of the area in the beginning, but this area can be easily splited-off if somebody wants to take this responsibility.

Sure.

I feel the same.

I have then a wish for the full: can we remove this ugly clock in the morphic project :)? Then now we will have animated guf so this will be fun.

Hi Stef I don't know what you are about but the fact that this clock is ugly is'nt the only criteria to use when talking about removing something. My point is that I used this morph to understand how you can make an analog 'meter' in Morphic so this can be useful for beginners, is'nt it?

ok but a real clockmorph would allow to turn the "aiguille". The project on morphic is to show the power of morphic and this clock fails to conveay that. I'm not saying that we should remove it from the image but just putting something else in the project.

Ok, you can be in charge of both for now, and if someone else comes up who's interested in the "Squeak Content & Look" stuff, that could be reassigned.
(Although much of the "Look" part of "Squeak Content & Look" is a separate aspect, such as your NewLook changes which are really source code changes, and affect the Basic image just as much as the Full image.)

I've thinked a lot before drop my opinion, mainly because I'm not sure if a semi-newbie as me would talk about this topic, but finally I've decided write these lines.
I think that Diego Gomez Deck is the perfect candidate to maintain the full image (whose that includes multimedia, etoys and so).
His vision is very closed (I think) to the original vision of SqC and has the posibility (in his new job) of work all days in Squeak. Also Diego has wroted a lot of enhancements and fixes and he has keep working hard in Squeak in the last years, proving knowledge and vocation.
Regards.
