As I prepare once again for OOPSLA (if you haven't yet registered, last day for the early-bird discount is the 26th) I've started thinking about the Squeak BOF, always one of the highlights of OOPSLA.
Over the past few years it seems like it's gotten harder to find a good time for the Squeak BOF, so I'm hoping to start discussion early enough that we can find a time that most folks can be there without missing something else near and dear to their interests.
The "traditional" time for the Squeak BOF is on Tuesday evening, which is on a Wednesday this year. (okay, not quite, but close. Most OOPSLAs of recent years run Sunday through Thursday. This one runs Monday through Friday, so everything is pushed back a day.) The past couple of years there has been some competition for that evening, since Cincom has scheduled a reception and presentation on that evening as well.
This year, Cincom and GemStone are hosting an event from 7-9pm Wednesday at the Sheraton. I'm hoping that the Squeak BOF isn't at the same time, because I want to go to both.
Looking over the schedule (available at oopsla.acm.org) the only times that don't conflict with *something* are in the middle of the night. There's even an invited talk scheduled Wednesday evening opposite the Cincom/GemStone bash.
My opinion at this point is that we might want to have the BOF during the day, conflicting with papers, panels, and such. Others may have different opinions, which is why I'm starting this discussion.
My personal preference at this point is for Friday morning, 10:00 to 12:00.

Any way that a non-attendee could get into the BOF?
I'd love to go but balk at spending the $400+...

Last year I went and registered for exhibits only (actually I've done that several times before, since I find talks on java/c++/eiffel/pretend-smalltalk-of-the-day to be utterly uninteresting when set against the fun at camp Smalltalk etc) and it was _free_. This was extra good since then, as now, I was unencumbered by those terrible burdens of employment. Hope to see you there.

Will Camp Smalltalk definitely be set up somewhere (ie, in the exhibit hall like last year) that an exhibits-only pass will get you into? If so, maybe I'll cancel my registration... ;)

I agree that it might be nice to have the Squeak BOF at a different time this year, so it doesn't conflict with the Cincom/Gemstone event (and other BOFs which tend to be held on that most popular third evening of OOPSLA). This would allow more people to attend the Squeak BOF, besides just the die-hards.
My personal preference at this point is for Friday morning, 10:00 to 12:00.
I'm not sure about having it too late or early during the conference, though, a lot of people might not be there on Friday.
I'd suggest having it sometime during the middle three days of the conference. Tuesday evening at 7:30pm would be my first choice... it's close to the middle of the week, and there doesn't seem to be much else going on then:

Thursday evening could be another option, or possibly sometime during the day, but that might be tricky to fit into everyone's schedule.

I hadn't looked at the possibility of Tuesday evening. I like it; it'd right after the welcome reception. Thanks for pointing this out.
Thursday evening could be another option,
The outing to the EMP is 7:00-11:00pm, and a lot of folks usually do that. We could have the BOF during the dinner hour, but I don't know when I'd eat....
So I'm now voting for Tuesday at 7:30pm (unless a bunch of folks say they aren't going to be there yet then since the main conference doesn't start until Wednesday morning).

Just wanted to say that I second Doug's proposal. :-) Squeak BOF at Tuesday 19:30 that is.

Cool, that's three votes in favor. :) Any dissenting opinions?
I think this would work out pretty well... most people attending the conference show up by the second evening (Tuesday in this case), before the keynote speech the next morning. In the past, the SqC folks usually arrive by the afternoon of the second day. But we won't have the conflicts with all the other BOFs, so we should get a bigger crowd.
This would be immediately after the welcome reception. Assuming there are no objections to this time, someone should send out a reminder to this list (and maybe comp.lang.smalltalk) a week or so before the conference, just so people know about it... maybe I'll do that. :)

Well, I'll be travelling from the east coast on Tuesday. The time difference will make this one a struggle for me. If there are no other times, I'd leave it this way though.

As far as arriving in Seattle early enough, I'd think that the time difference would make it easier (the BOF would begin at 22:30 east coast time). I suppose that staying awake that late would be harder for freshly-arrived east coast folks, but not nearly so bad as for the folks from the eastern hemisphere.

Doug, have you used Priceline this year too? :-) Anyone? Or can anyone recommend an "ok" hotel close to the conference facilities? For us I think $100 per room would be ok.
Thankful for any advice, regards Göran
