Guten Tag Utta!
Es tut mir leid, aber mein Deutsche ist nicht so gut, also ist dieses email auf english :)
The menus, code and general interface to Squeak are only available in English. However the eToys component of Squeak (which is especially designed for children) has been translated into a number of languages.
I don't know whether German is one of those languages, but there are several German users of Squeak. I suggest that you subscribe to the Squeak email list and ask your question there; I'm sure many people will be happy to talk to you.
Details about subscribing are at: http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/listinfo/squeak-dev
Cheers,
Russell

dear allen russell,
i was really inspired by the squeak -software and i really would spread it over several german schools, because what is going on in german schools is a desaster - most of the teachers have no idea how to develop a creative, interactive handling with computers on kids, so that kids are only learning a very consumative way of using the computer( badest learning software) i am also a teacher in arts and i think it's so necessary to show kids that they could play on a computer like on a piano -making compositions by their own.
so my question is: is there any german version of squeak? If not, is it possible to create one? i guess for such a translated version in european languages ( german french, spanish, italian) there will be a project budget at European Institutions for to realize this... maybe it is just in work....

PS: When googling for "german squeak" I found this:

Das ist wirklich zum Quietschen ;-)
(Sorry for the German post, I couldn't resist!)

ROTFL!!!
But what's this about "Das Quietschen, entwickelt von Robert G. Rittenhouse" (for our non-german speaking friends it means "Squeak, developed by Robert G. Rittenhouse"). Who the hell is Robert G. Rittenhouse?! I want to thank that man for giving us Squeak ;-)

So here's his response (forwarded with permission):
How embarassing. NO I do not claim to be the author of Squeak. I did submit a reference to Squeak to a list of free educational SW (SEUL) -- I probably screwed up the form (i.e. I'm just the author of the reference). I'll jump right on this and get it corrected.
My apologies to the fine folk who do develop Squeak.

I have also be cc'd on a number of emails he's been sending to the various sites I forwarded to him to get the references corrected.

The attribution is to the WDI team now, but watch the (probably automatic) translation of the names into languages different from spanish:
my favorite is "´elasticit´e Ingalls" in French, though "Klaps Brecker" in German is nice, too... :-)
Access to vm parms 24 and 25 which control the threshold of how much memory for the oops area is allocated or freed in modern os-x/win32/Unix? VM's which support growing and shrinking the oops memory size as it runs was not allowed due to a wee bug in Interpreter>>primitiveVMParameter.
A macintosh build with this feature, and fixes for 10.2 is forthcoming.

Between idle moments as I'm looking for work (hint hint) I wrested with Apple's installer.
Nasty piece of free software. After I beat it to death, and then discovered the 10.2 version is different yet no better I've an installer to install the squeak netscape plugin on 10.1.x and 10.2 which then allows you to visit www.squeakland.org in the native Internet Explorer 5.x browser which is built assuming you've a CFM carbon environment. Hah.
So anyone who wants to try this and perhaps is tired of running the os-9 version of IE so they can visit www.squeakland.org with the os-9 version of the plugin should send me email so we can test the installer before I go live with it on the squeakland site. -- ======================================================================== === John M. This thread reminded me of the missing explicit acknowledgement page for SmallSqueak Swiki.
This will be rectified this evening (unless, of course, someone will have done that before I can do it ;-).
Cheers,
PhiHo.
