Hi all,
does anyone have a high-resolution picture of the original Smalltalk Byte Magazine Cover available? The best resolution I could find is 1600x2160 [1]. That's a bit too little for a large wall poster, I fear ... :-)
Best,
Christoph
[1] https://vintageapple.org/byte/pdf/198108_Byte_Magazine_Vol_06-08_Smalltalk.p...
The artwork is actually available somewhere; Cincom bought the rights from Robert Tinney (well, somebody in the Smalltalk world did and I think it was them) and made it public domain. I'm sure I have known where to find it but right now... nope. Eliot probably knows.
There are occasionally original, Tinney created, prints available for sale; I have#232/500 up on my wall right now. And as ana side, the eniter Byte Aug'81 magazine is online at https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1981-08

That was me. I got ObjectShare or Cincom to pay Tunney so it could enter the public domain. That scan was as good as we could do in 2004-ish

Mine was lost in a house move years ago. Hard to believe that anyone would get rid of a perfectly good used magazine from the 1980s but apparently these things happen. What was I thinking?

So no one has got a perfect magazine and scanner? Then I will try my luck with some upscaling algorithms. Anyway, thank you! :-)

You (presume you) don’t want to scan the cover itself. Tinned produced the image as a print, of which he made 150 copies. The cover was derived from the print, but overlaid with the Byte logo, issue number, date of publication and summary of contents. Find an original print and scan that. It will give you far superior results.
Best,
Christoph

The one from archive.org has a pretty good resolution of 2387x3211. I bumped it up 200% and cleaned it a little bit.

Sweet! I jumped onto VistaPrint and used this image to create Squeak biz cards and a poster (18"x24"), with the addition of "Squeak FOSS", in a slightly complementary color. The QR Code jumps one to https://squeak.org.

Awesome! Aeshtiyaba! I took your image here, without the BYTE text, and spent 3 hours with a wonderful VistaPrint designer, Anna, from Tunisia. She helped me
a) increase resolution and sharpness of Vanessa’s Squeaky logo b) redesign the Squeak biz cards I’ve just ordered c) redesign the poster I’ve just ordered d) add to a PVC-free Board for presentations around ESqueak at my 29th Physics Reunion at the exquisite Guilford College March 24th through 25th.
I hope to be able to present ESqueak in completed form.
c) & d) are identical. I am attaching proofs you can use to generate your own materials if this design is acceptable. Of course, they must be accepted as is. No mods allowed.
Come January, when I’ve a few Egyptian Pounds clinking in me pocket, I plan to engage the VistaPrint design team to make this Smalltalk poster higher resolution. I’ll get the experts to work it right.

We are all familiar with this image, but.. what does it actually means? Why the balloon, why the castle on the tiny island?
Stef
The island first appeared on the cover of Byte's "Pascal" issue: https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1978-08
It was also done by Robert Tinney: [image: tumblr_okpzdpIaRN1sndzdgo1_1280.jpg]
The "About the Cover" article describes it in more detail:
because in 1978, Smalltalk had still been hidden behind XEROX PARC's doors.
So for the issue that announced Smalltalk to the world, they wanted to depict leaving that island https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1981-08
[image: image.png]
The balloon came from one of Dan's favorite books, Jules Verne's "L'Île mystérieuse" (The Mysterious Island), which is about an engineer saving people stranded on an isolated island with his ingenuity, and a hot air balloon. Well worth a read, and a familiar character makes an appearance (I won't spoil it for those who have not read it – unlike the Wikipedia article).

I'd kinda like to know what language the whackaloon on the raft-with-a-tent was representing.

The island first appeared on the cover of Byte's "Pascal" issue: https://archive.org/details/byte-magazine-1978-08

Hi all,
does anyone have a high-resolution picture of the original Smalltalk Byte Magazine Cover available? The best resolution I could find is 1600x2160 [1]. That's a bit too little for a large wall poster, I fear ... :-)
Best,
Christoph
