under IE not solved (original works, copy not even not the complete copy of the original page, but the applet from Franz did work, must be something in that applet?

I finally got this to work.
- upload the java .class file and the .html file referencing
the .class file to the Swiki (they must be in the same directory).
- Make a link to the html file in a manner similar to this:
<a href="/recipes/uploads/59/HelloColourSwirl.html">JAVA</a>
(here, recipes is the name of the swiki, 59 is the page to which both files have been uploaded.)
Click on the link and, all things being equal, the java applet will load.
This works fine on Linux with Netscape 4.7* (Comanche 4.10), but there are all kinds of security issues with IE and there may be operational problems with the 6* series of Netscape.
Cheers

If you don't care about your data, like file systems which automagically destroy themselves and have money to burn on 3rd party tools to keep your system staggering on, Microsoft (tm) have the Operating System for you.

It could be, but usually if an applet's not going to work you'll get a security warning from Microsoft (if, that is, it's an IE issue).
With my example, the correct method/code (to work the Felix Franz way) is to make a new page the swiki way, upload the class file to that page and then edit the page to something like:
<html><p align="center"> <applet codebase="uploads/62/" code="HelloColourSwirl.class" WIDTH=610 HEIGHT=60> </applet></p> </html>
where the uploads/62/ represents the page in question and the WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes are those for the applet (these are not strictly necessary, but generally they'll help pretty things up).
On my system this gives an applet within the Swiki window.
(You might like to try grabbing Felix's class file and seeing if it'll work on your system.....;-)
I might have a go with the applet you're trying to run later on tonight.
Cheers

Well, I downloaded the source code, saved it as LeastSquares.java and tried to compile it to produce a LeastSquares.class file. I got 5 errors which all relate to a package called Jama which locate tells me I have not got. (My guess is that Jama is some kind of maths package.) Sigh. This is one of the things I hate about Java. People use packages, don't include links, and don't even tell you if it's their own private little package or one it's worth looking for.
If you can point me to the Jama package, I'll have a go, but without that, there's no hope of getting it to compile.
On the other hand, there are some applets out there (and plenty in the /examples which come with the jdk) which use only the standard packages.
