Hi All,
It's that time again (sort of). Time to raise your voices and elect your leaders! Can you believe it's been over a year already?
It's a time for you to stand up, help your community and volunteer to serve!
Squeak wants you!
Every year we elect the SOB (Squeak Oversight Board) consisting of seven members from our community. The current board members are: 1. Marcel Taeumel 2. Tim Rowledge 3. David T. Lewis 4. Craig Latta 5. Jakob Reschke 6. Stéphane Rollandin 7. Bruce O'Neel
For more info on the board please see: https://squeak.org/board/#the-mission
Everything about the election, including schedule and more, is tracked here: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6664
Now until Friday 24th of February 2023, 18.00 UTC: Nominations of SOB members and campaigning!
Candidates should nominate themselves and start their campaign on the squeak-dev mailing list. Or if you nominate someone else, make sure that person really wants to run. :) I will not put anyone on the candidate list until that person makes it known on squeak-dev that he/she intends to run.
During this period, the candidates should ideally present themselves on squeak-dev, unless they have already done so, and the community can ask questions.
I encourage you to reach out to potential candidates, people that are active in the community and represent your views, and ask them to run. Some people will not run without encouragement. Also, I know that some people wait to the last minute to run for the board to see if others will run but please consider getting this year off to a faster start and just jump right in!
The schedule and process are as follows:
Now until Friday 24th of February 2023, 18.00 UTC: Nominations of SOB members and campaigning! Friday 24th of February 2023, 18.00 UTC: Candidate list is finalized. Friday 24th of February 2023, 19.00 UTC: Online election starts. Friday 10th of March 2023, 19.00 UTC: Online election ends. Results will be announced immediately after the election ends.
The voting period is two week long and ballots are sent out via email.
And how do you end up on the voter list? See below. :)
IMPORTANT: New voters will NOT be added once the election is started. You MUST try to get on the voter list before the 24th of February 2023 or you will NOT be able to vote. If your Email has changed please try to make sure it is changed on the list of voters before the election starts.
--------------------------
If you were invited to vote last year you are already on the voter list, no worries! If you are a new Squeaker and wish to vote you should do ONE of the following:
* Get a "known" Squeaker to vouch for you. If a known Squeaker sends an email to voters (at) squeak.org giving me a name and email for you, then I will add you.
* Send an email to voters (at) squeak.org yourself (and CC to squeak-dev if you like) with information/arguments showing me that you are indeed serious about voting and that you are indeed a Squeaker.
When the voting period starts all voters will receive an email with instructions and a link to the voting website.
If there are any further questions, just reply *in this thread* and I will closely track it - or send email to voters (at) squeak.org which points to me.
...so let's get on with it!
All the best, Patrick Rein
Hi,
So I will volunteer to continue to be a SOB and throw my hat into the ring.
But come on everyone, someone younger than me would be a great idea.
cheers
bruce

I am running for the Squeak Oversight Board again this year.
Squeak is an accessible and explorable environment from top to bottom, and as a hobby programmer I love using it to tinker with ideas and projects. Some of my projects can be found at http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/1265.
The ongoing challenge that most concerns me is to keep Squeak accessible, learnable, and explorable for people of all ages and backgrounds. Over the years, Squeak has become more capable and powerful in many ways, but sometimes at the cost of simplicity and ease of understanding. I want Squeak to be approachable for young people, old people, artists, musicians, teachers, and mathematicians.
Thanks for considering me for the board. As others have said, we also want to encourage new people to serve. Diverse people and perspectives are welcome, and you do not be a programmer or computer scientist to contribute.

just a short reminder that the nominations period only runs until this Friday (see below for the complete timeline)!
So far we have three great candidates. But as with all elections: More is better, so, keep the nominations coming!

Hi all! :-)
I would like to continue serving on the Squeak Oversight Board in 2023!
As always, I value backwards compatibility and modularity (i.e., extensibility and readability). I want to retain the content we have while cleaning up and moving forward.
At the university, my colleagues and I use Squeak for teaching and researching topics on object-oriented design and exploratory progamming, cherishing liveness and short feedback loops.
In my past 10 years of intensive Squeaking, I realized that it is not that easy to come up with and introduce substantial changes to a system that is already very capable of boosting productivity like no other programming system -- unless one gets very intimate with what there already is and how to actually use it effectively. There is no need to follow certain trends from other communities when there is no clear mapping to our own values. Yes, it takes time to learn about and become proficient with Squeak's exploratory practices. Still, it is worth doing it. Smalltalk is a beautiful language. Squeak has powerful tools for exploration and debugging, which we keep on improving day by day.

Hello everyone,
I volunteer to be a member of the next board as well.
Having been there for the current term has been a nice experience. We have heard some interesting stories, everybody was friendly and I hope that I have been agreeable company too. One incidental bonus for me personally is that whenever I read an email from the others, whom I had not already met before, now I can well imagine them speaking the message out aloud, voice and face. (-:
Alas my prediction from last year's candidacy remained largely true in that I have not been a really active board member, and have not even done very much in Squeak over the past year. But at least whenever someone asked me to take something to the board meeting, I did that, and I gave a demo of the Git Browser and answered questions about it during one meeting. Right now I have no indication that my Squeak activity is going to surge in the next twelve months, so I will not present an agenda. I like Smalltalk and Squeak, and I believe it deserves a fully staffed board.
While I am not quite there to ask for candidates to be younger than me, I would be very glad if some people who are more active and invested than me would throw their hat in the ring and run for the board! Of course, I don't mean to say that you should meet certain KPIs ;-) It is enough if you simply have fun with Squeak.
Kind regards, Jakob

Jakob is making a very good point here; this isn't about special expertise, or 'professional involvement' etc - it's about caring for Squeak and having fun doing it.
The board mostly has to ensure there is some infrastructure to provide the basics of the community - mailing lists, website(s), build & integration services, stuff like that. Sometimes there is even a money problem to solve. Fairly often - because the board often consists of people actively developing in Squeak - we do actually debate technical points, but that really isn't the purpose.
And if you want to help maintain the Squeak world but don't feel like being on the board, there are plenty of things always in need of time & effort. Do you know server wrangling? Volunteer to help the boxadmins team. Are you good with worms? Err, words? Improve the swiki, or make youtube educational content to spread the weird!

Hi all--
I'd be happy to serve on the Squeak board again this year.
I'm excited about the work/play I've been doing[1] with several Smalltalks using Vanessa Freudenberg's SqueakJS virtual machine, and with WebAssembly. I'd like to explore the frontiers of polyglot livecoding with you all. :) In particular, I think there are fascinating and impactful new things we can do with Squeak on the Web platform.
It would be fun to gather in real-time more often. I enjoyed the rolling video call I organized for Squeak's 25th birthday, even with the timezone challenges. Maybe, with the help of other groups, we can start a ritual of a Squeak breakout room after their main calls. I'd be happy to do that with the California Smalltalkers group[2]. Perhaps we could get the UK Smalltalk Users Group interested in post-meeting breakout rooms, too, in addition to our Discord and Slack channels.
You can read a bit about my Smalltalk life at [3]. I've been part of the Squeak community since the beginning, and I'm very grateful!
thanks again, Craig
