Hi all,
I wanted to know the following: 1. How do I remove all traces of Morphic (I tried working using the code from MajorShrink, but it still leaves some traces) 2. How do I remove all traces of Balloon (same probs as above) 3. How do I change the menus so that they don't have items which try and access the old stuff 4. How do I get a clean system which doesn't have a lot of rif-raf? (in short, look like Twiggy, nut not feel the same ;)
Also, I think, with my past comments regarding MVC, Morphic and Balloon, I have unknowingly offended some people. I would like to convey that I do respect their work (infact admire it) but what _I_ need is not what Morphic and Balloon can offer, and none of my comments were targeted to be offensive.
Regards,

Once you've run majorShrink, I don't know of any other way to proceed than careful tweaking by hand.
In the system as it stands, that is.
As you know, we're headed for a better world in which the natural divisions in the system are reified as modules. As we get more experience with module-based construction and deconstruction, we will incorporate appropriate support in the architecture of menus and other such extensible components precisely so that, when we want to minimize the system as you do, it is as simple as selecting modules and removing them. We're not there yet.

In my experience the only real way to do this is throw it all out and start over again ;-). Embrace rif-raf.

I didn't get any sense of disrespect, and I didn't even sense that others took your comments that way. You did get some feedback about Morphic's good points but, hey, majorShrink wouldn't be there if we didn't think it was a valid goal.

By the way, besides being way behind in finalizing 3.2, I have a selfish interest in making its majorShrink as good as possible before being done with it. If you or anyone else has fixed or otherwise improved majorShrink for 3.2, please send me your suggestions or changesets in the next week.

I'm sorry to say that but this book is not interesting. Addison wanted to have a book on Squeak so they redesigned an old book to get a squeak product. This book ends up in the category reads once throw away. and this is a pity because there are so much to show on squeak.
The price they sold it is also crazy. Send your questions and we will be able to answer.

Haven't noticed any typos but having the first example or two not work can be a bit disconcerting.
Don't the authors provide e-mail addresses ? If not... Hmm... a google search will eventual lead you to e-mail addresses for at least two of the authors. And the third seems to work for/with the other two in Oregon.

Hmm.... looks like they (Addison-Wesley) needs to get their act together. They seem to have two different web sites for this book:
http://www.aw.com/catalog/academic/product/1,4096,0201731142,00.html http://cseng.aw.com/book/0,,0201731142,00.html
and not the same content.
I'm sorry to say that but this book is not interesting.
For you or for anyone ? I've been reading it to see if it will improve my understanding of things Smalltalk & Squeak & I find a bit light but not offensively so.
Addison wanted to have a book on Squeak so they redesigned an old book to get a squeak product.
And as we all know, only "new" things are good. :-).
The older, non-Squeak edition seems to get mentioned as a good Smalltalk book in a number of places...
This book ends up in the category reads once throw away.
I won't quote from the book but words to that effect are actually stated somewhere in the introduction/preface to the book (which is available on a few web sites for the book).
and this is a pity because there are so much to show on squeak.
If you read the book the intent ISN'T to turn someone into a Squeak expert. It is using Squeak/Smalltalk to introduce object oriented programming concepts. For anyone who has been doing things with Smalltalk for a while... well... it'll probably put them to sleep.
The price they sold it is also crazy.
Can't say I'm thrilled with the price of ANY non-Microsoft/Linux related programming books "out there" but have assumed (wrongly?) that this is due to the usual "market forces" for anything resembling a textbook....

I am working at creating a MVC shrink, it will render a MVC only system which will be around 4Mb in size.
At this point I am stuck with the menu recreation stuff, can you help?
I just can't figure out two things: 1. How do I re-write the menus? (I tried the code from MajorShrink, couldn't get it to work) 2. How do I eliminate Balloon? (That might shrink the size even more)
Final goal is to create a fast system which can be deployed on solid-state computers to be put in Schools, I guess I could start a new mail thread about this topic.
