how to print/inspect stuff with XCode?

Hi guys. While debugging the VM with XCode, I sometime feel really stupid. Uhhh, sorry, happy Christmats ;) I cannot inspect values or do things. Maybe I am so used to Smalltalk that I am asking too much to C. So, for example I have this code: if (! ( ( (usqInt) addr ) <= ( (usqInt) GIV(fwdTableNext) ) )) { print("fwdTableNext"); }; And I have a breakpoint on the print. I can see the value of fwdTableNext or addr. But how can I inspect for example, "GIV(fwdTableNext)" ? or "( (usqInt) GIV(fwdTableNext) )" ? I mean...how can I inspect the result of calling certain functions to such variables? can I do that? if I cannot, how it is expected I can debug that for example? (assing each result to another variable ans inspect that?) I tried using the the expressions browser, but everything I add says "out of scope" Thanks in advance, Mariano

Hi ken. Then you can try to load the baseline itself, and not the version, and use the latest from SVN. For example, (ConfigurationOfVMMaker project version: '1.4-baseline') load that will load all the latests versions. What are the current best steps for loading VMMaker into the latest Squeak4.2 trunk? I thought that update in http://www.squeaksource.com/VMMaker repository might do it but I see it tries to load the following, but the ' later available ->' shows the ones that have later versions available.: FFI-Pools-ar.1 later available -> eem.2 SharedPool-Speech-dtl.2 VMMaker-dtl.170 later available -> dtl.209 MemoryAccess-dtl.3 SlangBrowser-dtl.3 dtl.4 VMConstruction-Plugins-OSProcessPlugin-mtf.21 VMConstruction-Plugins-AioPlugin-dtl.9 later available -> dtl.11 VMConstruction-Plugins-XDisplayControlPlugin-dtl.7 later available -> dtl.9 Balloon3D-Constants-ar.5 Balloon3D-Plugins-ar.4 later available -> ar.6 FreeType-tween.435 Freetype-Plugin-dtl.56 Alien-VMMaker-Plugins-John M McIntosh.8 I don't understand what VMMaker update is intended to do. cog and crash.dmp

Hi! Not my turf, so I'm a little puzzled! Does the latest cog vm for windows (7) also write a crash.dmp file to the vmpath when it crashes? The dialog says so, but I can't find the file in that directory. I have permission to create/write files in that directory.Is there some sort of switch/ini-Setting I have to set to make the vm dump that file on a crash? Alex

That was a great tour through the pieces. I can see how the Slang becomes the actual C code. The difference between sq.h and gnu-interp.c is the letter "u", as mentioned in that great post. I suppose, though, that's not really the problem, and my playing with C files or Slang methods I don't understand will be unproductive. I took sources from squeakvm.org and compiled them successfully using Adrian's blog. No problem. I started an image with that vm. Then I started to play with the VMMaker and a taint in the process was introduced. The only way I could imagine introducing a taint was in putting in/leaving out a plugin contrary to the arrangement Adrian specified. But that's not the problem, because I've seen plugins compiled that weren't supposed to be and such. The problem is the VMMaker itself, I suppose. It's not generic. It's keyed - unwittingly, it seems - to specific sets of source files. And so we have drift that can't be accounted for in Adrian's blog. All the pieces of this process are like stars that keep moving and you can only take a picture of a certain period in time. It's this drift that drove Igor to write NativeBoost, I'd guess. When he writes code with NativeBoost he knows that the image, vm, and plugins may all drift, but the memory won't, so he doesn't have to recompile every time something changes. The logical question to ask the VMMaker is "What versions are you good for, O VMMaker?" which - I'm willing to bet - is not a question it can readily answer. I'll read the last paragraph sometime in the future. :) Chris

Linux VM with IA32ABI plugin (Alien)

Hi all, I know that someone already manage to compile linux (squeak or cog) VM with Alien support (plugin I32ABI). Could someone, send me an already compiled VM? ;-) BTW, why the compiled linux VM available for download does not include this plugin? Thanks, #Luc

Actually, I'll read that paragraph now. I did the obvious, removed the "u" in two places, and proceeded to cmake and make. I compiled a vm and started the image with it. Mission accomplished. Help button, here I come. :) And on to a tutorial on the wiki called Ragnar Hojland Espinosa and the Wonderful Land Of Pluginia. Chris

Hi David, your download should work almost "out of the box". Adrian's blog; last part

I made it right down to the last "make" at the end of section four, when an error popped up. This is the last thing to make it work, so any insight into solving this last part would be greatly appreciated. I did use a 4.1 Squeak image for my VMMaker and such. But I can't figure that's what's making the error. It's in "gnu-interp.c", I think.
