Issue 231: cleaup configuration editor extensions to Configuration

New issue report by jfitzell:
the development package adds a whole bunch of methods to the Configuration
hierarchy. When I refactored the Configuration stuff, I fixed those methods
as I went to make sure they still worked but that was it.

I'm pretty sure some of them could be better implemented or removed based
on the new interface for Configuration. Somebody should at least take a
look at them and see.
