I firmly believe that your "expectation" described above is only because 
of past experience.  Of course, that is what you imply when you say "I 
guess a large part of it is what one is used to though".

I think KDE is dog-slow, as is GNOME.  Too much of the "kitchen-sink" 
syndrom, IMO.

I use WindowMaker myself.
