Well, you can't argue about taste (as a matter of fact, I think you can,
but that's an entirely different subject ;-)) but you certainly can
argue about procedures involving taste. 

I think it'd be a good rule that if we move UI elements away from
some former state where the chance is there that people will not like
the chance, stuff doesn't land in the update stream unless there's an
easy way to undo the change - easy being preferably a preference
setting, or if that's not possible a SM package.
