You might want to mention that in most cases, people can designate United Way contributions to 502(c)(3) organizations.  I think UWay skims off 10% for "handling"  at least this was the case last year during the general campaingn.  If you have people who are "encouraged" to give to United Way, this might be a nice avenue to raise funds.
