Hi Cees, We are using Magma for a commercial Seaside app. We have it working with both a local and remote Magma server. We would like to encourage the use of Magma + Seaside. Could you suggest what format our experiences would be useful ? HTML, Monticello, FAQ. Cheers Brent

Primitive has failed - Linux

Hello, I am trying to use Magma for a little projecto of mine. I have apparently managed to create and store a few objects. But when I close the database and open it again I get the Primitive has failed exception with the details I am attaching. I am running on a 3.9 image under linux with the following VM version: ramiro@alcmena:~$ squeak -version 3.8a-1 #1 Tue Mar 22 14:03:58 PST 2005 ccache Squeak3.8gamma of '24 November 2004' [latest update: #6548] Has anyone come across this issue? In light of the recent discussion on squeak-dev regarding nil keys in Dictionaries, I have removed the anti-fixes related to this (including the #associationsDo: override in WeakKeyIdentityDictionary) from the "System overrides for ma object serialization" package of Magma. Magma is back to 100% pure*, making no system changes that have not been approved for at least 3.9. [*] I left the 3.9-approved fixes in, however, for <= 3.8 users. I have also removed all use of Ma*Dictionary's. They were written to fix the performance bug with #removeKey: for which they are 1000x (or more) faster than their standard counterparts but are a bit slower for other operations. Magma now avoids removeKey: altogether, so going back to the standard Dictionary's you should enjoy a minor performance improvement. A few more improvements too: - More robust network error handling for when other end drops unexpectedly. - Tests now only open transcript in conductor image. Besides being faster, Squeak was locking up loading a font or something, no time to debug it. - Fixed possible error when opening partially-written commitPackages file. - Fixed MaCollectionIndex >> #recordSize:. Hi Chris, There is a bug in Magma tester-cmm.202 which presents the recordSize: from being set. The current version has an erroneous isNil check which prevents the rcord size from ever begin set to a valid value. This version works well for us: MaCollectionIndex >> #recordSize: anInteger "Only set this ONCE, when you create the index." (MaHashIndex validRecordSizes includes: anInteger) ifTrue: [ recordSize := anInteger ] ifFalse: [ MagmaUserError signal: 'recordSize must be one of ' , MaHashIndex validRecordSizes printString ] ! BUG: MagmaRepositoryController class >> #delete:

Hi Chis, In MagmaTester-cmm.202, the MagmaRepositoryController class >>#delete: function does not delete all the Magma files. It does not delete 'commitPackages'. Is this deliberate or an oversight since the introduction of the rigourous recovery functionality ? Cheers Brent

Generation of unique IDs

I have a general question on the generation of unique IDs for things like customer number or invoice number, etc. I'm using Seaside with Magma. I guess that I could design the app in Seaside so that there is a single user (e.g. seaside) logging into Magma for a particular application. I also assume that regardless of the number of users hitting the Seaside app, there is a single instance of the app managing multiple sessions. Is it safe to assume the following: 1) Communication between Seaside app and Magma is serialized in such a way that at any given moment, no two sessions will be performing the exact same operation? For example, if two users trying to delete the same object, will seaside serialize each request to Magma so that the second user will get a transaction commit error because the object is no longer there? 2) I maintain a dictionary of IDs in Magma so that when a new customer is created, the app looks up the next customer ID in the dictionary, and increments the count. I would assume that if I put this code along with the code to create the customer object in the same transaction, it should all happen atomically. My question is (and somehow related to the above question) if two users are creating different customers, what inherent fail safe mechanism exist so that the second transaction will get the updated next customer ID from the dictionary during its transaction process? 3) I believe the way squeak works with Dictionaries is that it tries to load it all in memory. Will it do the same with a Magma loaded Dictionary? The question is more geared to answer the following question: if I am in a transaction creating a new customer and I have the Dictionary element of customer IDs "locked", will the entire Dictionary be "locked"? If another transaction is occurring at the same moment where another user is creating a sales order and the app tries to get the next sales order number from the same dictionary, will it find a conflict? Magma tester-cmm.202.mcz

I've upgraded to Monticello 258, but many of the same issues exist. I spent my Friday loading, saving, loading, resaving and testing, reloading, resaving and retesting. It now looks right. Please upgrade to this when you can. Deleting my package-cache is not good because it needs all the historical entries to merge changes into the security branch. Instead I create a blank directory in which I only put the image and changes and test the load and test cases from there. As always, let me know if any issues. - Chris

Incorrect Monticello dependencies for Magma tester-cmm-184

Hi Chris, We are trying to integrate Monticello and our Subversion build process. When we do a 'svn update', we also run a wee script which copies the appropriate Monticellos from our server. This allows us to work offline. Our script downloads the latest version of each Monticello. The highest value for Magma tester is cmm-184. Regrettably, the dependancy chain of Magma tester-cmm.184 requires BOTH "Ma client server-cmm.94.mcz" and "Ma client server-cmm.96.mcz". This is clearly not possible as only one version of "Ma! client server" can be installed in the image at a time. Similarly there are dependancy problems with: Ma client server-cmm.94.mcz Ma object serialization-cmm.110.mcz Ma special collections-cmm.43.mcz Would it be possible to correct this in your next release ? PS. Should you wish to confirm there are no dependany problems, I do this: 1. Delete the contents of package-cache 2. Open a clean image 3. Load "Magma tester" from your master repository. 4. Quit without Saving. 5. The Monticellos your installed will be in package-cache 6. Do not use Magma 190 or 192

My brain must've been somewhere else when I released these. First, 190 doesn't work at all, 192 was a "quick fix" for it but with another bug. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please use 184. I will sort this out and repost yet *another* version soon. - Chris
