optional panes out-of-the-box, and other preferences

Hi,
  Oh, this is pretty nice straight out of the box :-)

My one wish would be to do something better when Squeak
tries to play a sound and the OS can't support it rather than 
hanging.  This is going to catch a lot of unix users out.
