Thanks for the quick responses.

Actually, I appear to be using Stuffit Standard 8.0.2.  It has the 
preferences check box "set execute permissions by default" checked.  No 
joy.

Perhaps I should upgrade to Stuffit Deluxe 9.0.1 for $50.00.
