question about BufferMsecs in SoundPlayer

Hi, I have spent the day exploring some of the classes in the System Sound library. There is an example of a Bach Fugue (I think I've actually played a piano version at one time.) which I had trouble getting to play cleanly on by NT box at home. I know the sound card is OK because Encore among other things works. Problem #1. In order to get rid of a rather abundant reverb, it seemed just resetting the reverb to false in the initialization file did not turn it off so I used this. I do not know why it works like this. SoundPlayer startUp. SoundPlayer stopReverb. PluckedSound bachFugue play. Problem #2 After getting rid of the reverb. The piece would start off OK then when the 3rd and 4th voices "kicked in" it seemed to become "out of synch". I remarked out those two voices and got the entire piece to play cleanly "minus the 2 voices". I have tried resetting BufferMsecs to see what would happen but it did not correct the problem. It seems like I had a similar problem with a sequencer I had to use one time on stage. The sequencer belonged to another musician so I never figured out the problem. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. Ted did the original FTPsocket in less than a day. You just need to get the FTP protocol spec, which is available on the web as an "RFC". I think you can find it starting at starting at www.org -- John P.S. We did passive mode just because it works better from behind certain types of firewalls.

compile/link problem on Solaris

Is there a central place where I could look for bug reports/solutions (other than scanning all messages to this newsgroup)? I dropped off the list for a few months, and had to discard my 1.23 version. I just picked up the sources for 1.31 and tried to build it on Solaris 2.5.x. The first time I did the make I got error messages from the compiler indicating unresolved symbol references, but hadn't captured them in a file, so I cleaned up and made the system again, capturing the error messages; there weren't any this time... (Why not? -- compiler got smarter, I guess ) Anyway, it built and started up nicely. I've hit one problem consistently: Play With Me - 4, which displays the "Back to the Future" memo, has this little problem: If I click on the arrow to go to the next page, the system freezes and the only way I have found to recover is to kill the process. Anyone know of a problem like that? --- Another question: Is it possible to build the system completely from scratch, without using a preexisting image file (but with a changes file and the sources)? If I take the C sources and build the VM, can I have it build the system from the sources? How? -- where's that documented? Thanks, joe

I had to go to extra work in FTPSocket to make it passive, so we could use it from behind the firewall at Disney. In active mode, the client obtains a port, tells the server, and the server opens a connection to it. In passive mode, the client asks the server what port it wants to use on the server. The server says a number, and the client opens a port to the server. The client then issues a put or a get. But a better solution is to find a Mac FTP server that does passive. Squeak could be such a server with a little work..... --Ted. speech synthesis

Has anyone been working on speech synthesis for Squeak? I have roughly implemented -enterely in Squeak- a synthesizer based upon rsynth (Klatt cascade/parallel filter bank synthesizer and rule-based text to phonemes translator), but it's just an experiment... the quality is pour and it's very slow. I'd like to do something in the diphone concatenation direction (just like Festival does, for instance). I'd like to know of other people working in the same thing for Squeak, if there are any. MultiMenu bug in morph.

today I was working with morphs and opened the new morph menu and submenu... when the sub-menu was open, I resized the world window and return to the menu but clicked in the parent menu... The parent menu closed but the child menu not. Is it a bug or an intentional behaviour? Ale.
