sound generation question

How do I use the internal FM sound generator to play sounds without predetermined duration? That is, something like: aSound pitch: aPitch volume: aVolume play aSound stop I had a look through AbstractSound, LoopedSampleSound and various other classes but couldn't seem to find anything that has protocol something like 'start' and 'stop'. But as this is how MIDI works, I guess it must be possible? Thanks all Daniel

Daniel, If you are looking at the class in a browser, choose "class refs (N)" from the menu on the class list pane. Or just type ctrl-n (or cmd-shift-n). DropDownListMorph

more newbie questions ... thanks to all for help ... if I create and display a new instance of DropDownListMorph and initialise and inspect the items list like this: d _ DropDownChoiceMorph new. d items: (AbstractSound soundNames). d openInWorld. d inspect but then click on the list, why does the list go back to being the default of a colour list? How do I stop this? I appreciate that I should (ideally) be able to sort a lot of these things out by going through the code, but frankly, although I'm OK with Smalltalk, there's just too much of it to be able to untangle it right now ... especially trying to work out how Morphic goes together / can be used. So when something like this comes up, its back to the list. Thanks again Daniel

I played around with the apple cocoa a few years back and it showed lots of potentional. I never got my feet really wet though and since the work was discontinued by apple and stagecast took over I have not looked at it. The times I have played with the tile script system in squeak I have run into problems / logic I don't understand and that probably is to hard tying to the underlying program logic. That way the tiles become a slow and hard way to write some stuff I can do in the browser. What I would like is that the logic of the gui programming is abstracted away from the underlying system. The less I know about what's underneath the gui the better. I don't want to know how the tool was made to be able to use it. Like Henrik said, the horror of filesystems and alike should not be visible to the user. I think of it like the step up from writing machine code to Smalltalk. It has to be equally big step up. I think we have at hand some of the most powerfull and well designed tools to make that step; Smalltalk and Morphic. And I think it's on the way to become really great. It's like the last ropes that hold the ballon tied down should be cut so we could fly :-) Karl

Changes files and new versions of Squeak

Hello, are .changes files compatible across versions? Suppose I do changes in the form of adding classes - will I be able to carry those changes with me and apply them to newer Squeak images when they come out? In theory this should be possible as long as I don't start changing the standard classes that come with Smalltalk. What I've proposed here before is a Smalltalk server and a C client that does little more than pass the contents of the script and arguments to the server and manage the returned info (exit value, as well a stdout stream). I've been very busy lately, but a very, very crude prototype (using Python as the client) was done in a few lines. As I've developing this on Mac OS X and Linux, I'm still in search of a security model. Someone suggested on c.l.s starting an image per user on login as opposed to one image running as root or nobody changing user on a per request basis. As for making this more appealing for those who cling to the somewhat more traditional syntax of Perl and Python, I've not given it a thought, but the replies we've seen in this thread sound very promising for allowing for a user to choose her syntax to be that of Python, rather than Smalltalk's. noviceMode no good for novice

I just discovered the reason why the World menu was no longer popping up when I clicked the background, like it initially did in my Morphic project. The reason was I had turned noviceMode ON in the prefs. I've now turned noviceMode OFF ;-) What are actually the "benefits" of noviceMode?
