space is low......

Trying to save project as file with one of the Squeakland projects I get "space is low...." kdf shows I've got 1.6Gb free! OK, so 90% is flying by the seat of the pants on Linux, but 82.3% full? So where, exactly, is the space low? And how can I grow it? Cheers John -- If you don't care about your data, like file systems which automagically destroy themselves and have money to burn on 3rd party tools to keep your system staggering on, Microsoft (tm) have the Operating System for you.

If you gave Squeak the appropriate 3D plug-in, which would probably have to be hand-optimised, I think you could have a pretty good go at something that was perhaps a year behind the art (i.e. needed a CPU about twice as fast as the equivalent hand-crafted equivalent). However, portability would likely be a *big* problem as you'd almost certainly have tied yourself to one architecture in the process. If you're using a software blt to to any of this, however, forget it! - Peter

Game Programming in Squeak

Hi all, I was paging through a computer magazine the other day and came across a development environment called Dark Basic. The concept was a simple language used to program 2D/3D games on IBM computers using Direct X etc. The concept was pretty good and I had a little play with a demo of the product. However, the more I looked at it, the more I thought that it made more sense to do this in Smalltalk - particularly Squeak. In my mind computer games seemed particularly suited to Object oriented programming with a aircraft being an instance of a class with its own individual behaviour flying over a landscape which could easily be an instance of a special kind of Squeak Morph. However, programming a game on an IBM PC would involve using platform specific tools like Direct X which would have to be built into the VM I imagine to maintain Smalltalk's platform independence. I'm assuming that Squeak's VM does not contain all these nifty tools, but is it likely to in the future? I know the ability to program 3D shoot-em-ups isn't exactly priority number 1 for the Squeak movement, but I do believe it certainly fits into the scheme of things so I'm hoping the question doesn't seem out of line. So is the language that strives to offer more in the way of music going to go a little further into the realm of serious game playing? And no - don't ask me to do it. Dennis, That's a significant accomplishment for your first coding effort in Squeak! Many years ago I wrote and sold the first commercial gauges/meters framework for Smalltalk (PluggableGauges- 1987), and I must say I am impressed with all the functionality you have included (much more than I did!). A few suggestions: **Method size In general Smalltalk/Squeak methods are only a few lines long. Years ago at Knowledge Systems we ran stats on methods across the Digitalk image and found that the average number of messages sent in a method was only 6! That's not lines of code, but individual messages. While its OK to have longer methods for reasons like performance(very, very rare) or algorithmic clarity, your code will typically be much more readable and reusable if it is broken up into smaller methods that have nice "intention revealing" names, as Ward Cunningham used to say (and still does, I imagine!). Try rewriting your draw method to separate scale drawing from indicator/needle drawing, and perhaps within your scale drawing method, split it between major/minor tics and labels. This will give users who want to subclass and extend your code lots of easy places to override specific aspects of the drawing without cloning the entire drawing code. **RedZones and parsing Keeping your red zone data in string form and constantly reparsing it in various methods is unnecessary and overly complex, especially since Squeak is about objects, not data structures. Why not simply create a new class called AlarmZone or something like it and let it model the zone range, color and possibly an alarm action to be executed when the value of the meter is in range. In your properties dialog, you can keep the same kind of textual specification for zones (with some simplification...see below) and then on OK/Apply, parse it once and create and save the appropriate zone objects in your meter to later inform the draw methods. **RedZone specification made easier Squeak has lots of ways to parse and manipulate strings, but for simple data structure entry like (10,20)(90,100) you can let the compiler do the work for you. For instance, you could convert the string '(10 20)(90 100)' into an array of arrays of numbers with the folowing code: inputString := '(10 20)(90 100)'. correctSyntaxString := '#(',inputString,')'. array := Compiler evaluate: correctSyntaxString . in other words, you let the user enter Smalltalk syntax or somethign close and then simply evaluate the text into an object. Hey, since you are using the Smalltalk compiler anyway, you could even have the user enter something like: {AlarmZone min: 10 max: 20 color: Color blue action:[Broker buyStock]. AlarmZone min: 90 max: 100 color: Color red action:[Broker sellStock]} And the compiler expression above will return an array of AlarmZone objects ready to be saved in the meter. End user programming on the cheap! **Display performance Last critique, since most of your submorphs don't change each step, don't remove and recreate them each step. Even with the needle, you only need to update it if the value has changed since last time, unless of course the user is moving or scaling the whole meter, in which case you need to redo everything. **Enhancement suggestion Why limit your source to a URL? You could again let the user enter a Smalltalk expression that you assume results in a number when evaluated. Then use the 'Compiler evaluate: theSource' approach each time you need the value. This turns your meters into a more general gauges package that can be used for any value in Squeak. To summarize: In general, use more, smaller methods with intention revealing names. Make first class objects for your data structures and give them appropriate behavior. Let Squeak do the parsing work whenever possible (and practical from a user skill standpoint). 2 Squeak questions

Hi all, I'm new to Squeak and Smalltalk. As a new user I can attest to the difficulties of using Squeak without good documentation. There are some excellent tutorials, but they only go so far. And when one attempts to step beyond the tutorial material there are inevitable difficulties. What is needed is more detailed reference material on the objects in the Squeak system. As a small step toward a solution here are two (mega) questions on areas that I found difficult or confusing. If there are enough responses I'll summarize in a form suitable for posting somewhere. Question 1: What text morphs are available? There are tons of text-related objects: AcceptableCleanTextMorph, AlansTextPlusMorph, PluggableTextMorph, Text, TextMorph, TextComponent, TextFieldMorph, TextContainer... Then there's the string set: String, StringMorph, UpdatingStringMorph, StringHolder... What is the purpose of each? What are their various strengths/weaknesses? Which are recommended? Question 2: How do coordinate systems work? In which direction do coordinates increase? Are there exceptions? Are coordinates global to the screen or local to a window or morph? If so, how many simultaneous "processes" would a typical theatrical production have? concentrating on the *verbal* aspects; whereas one can certainly have a verbal interchange and a non-verbal interchange elsewhere happening at the same time, and When I was learning how to type I noticed that I'd think what to say, again, concentrating on a *verbal* task. I dare say we're all agreed that - people can do more than one thing at once - people can't do MANY things at once - people can only say or type one thing at a time The question I think is interesting is whether telling students to think in terms of objects TALKING to each other makes it harder for them to think of concurrent implementations. Would some other metaphor (perhaps sending couriers with messages, or thinking about a factory with things concurrently moving from machine to machine at the same time) make it easier for them to think of and understand concurrency? All I know about Ken Kahn's ToonTalk is what I've read in this thread, but it sounds as though uses a "physical" rather than "verbal" metaphor, so I think his observations are particularly interesting here.
