[ENH] removeRuleDataClasses-brp [cd][sm][su]

Hi, Change Set: removeRuleDateClasses-brp Date: 27 September 2004 Author: Brent Pinkney Remove RuleDate and its subclasses. These classes were inherited from the ANSI Compatibility package but are NOT part of the Chronology package. They are not referenced by any other classes. Unstable Squeak, take 2

Ok, I'm opening the Unstable Squeak project up again. Not that much has changed since the last time: the USSClient has been tweaked a bit, and the bootstrap image includes an experimental version of Monticello that adds a binary code representation to its packages as well as the usual chunk format. This speeds loading up by quite a lot. It also doubles the size of the .mcz files, so I'm afraid that anyone on dial-up is probably going to be left out in the cold by this particular experiment. Note that because the existing versions on SqueakSource *don't* have this binary format, they'll still be slow to load at first, although once you have them in your package-cache it should be much faster. And as we commit more new versions to the repository, things will get faster even when you don't have anything cached. That's something that would have to be fixed if we were ever going to use this "for real". But since we know that it's broken, let's try to step around those particular broken spots, and not commit anything that falls into those categories. It may be that we find that restriction too frustrating, but that'll tell us something too. Cheers, Avi

Stop squeak running in background?

Hi all-- I have installed Squeak-3.7 w/ KomHttpServer-6.2 & Seaside-2.5b4 on Linux. Squeak runs in the background w/o a GUI, like a "service". I start Squeak from a shell like this: squeak -nosound -nodisplay & What is the best way to stop squeak in this case? I can use `killall squeak', or just open the System Monitor and end or kill the process. But could this approach result in data loss or corruption? Is there a "preferred" way to stop squeak when running w/o a GUI? Any helpful suggestion will be appreciated. --Laurent

[ANN] Squeak talk at Columbus, OH XP User's Group

Hi everyone, This is late notice, but I thought I would pass it on in case there was anybody interested. John Pierce and I will be giving a talk about Smalltalk tomorrow, Wednesday September 29. We will be using Squeak to do our demonstrations. The talk is at the Columbus, OH XP User's Group. The talk is introductory, meant for people who have never seen Smalltalk, or have only had a little experience with it. We of course welcome more experienced Smalltalkers as well - for moral support if nothing else! ;) The meeting runs from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM and is at the Smith Private Dining Room OCLC Dublin, OH The group has a website at http://www.flairsoft.net/XP/ with maps. "Change Set: ColorEnh-st Date: 27 September 2004 Author: Samuel Tardieu Color tests were failing: the hex triplet was returned in lower case instead of the expected upper case (test fixed). Also, asHTMLColor returned a string of length 8 by using directly the hex value which encodes a color between 0 and 1023 instead of the expected 0 and 255. The asHTMLColor method has been fixed and tests added. The colorFrom: class method has been enhanced to accept a 6 characters long hexadecimal string."

[ANN] PreferenceBrowser new version

Hi, As you might guessed from my previous email I just released a new version of PreferenceBrowser. This release is aimed for squeak3.8 and requires the .cs I just sent, but if you want to use this version with Squeak3.7 you can do it but be sure to file in the .cs first. The changes on this version are internal mostly. They are related to the changes I proposed on my previous mail. As for the external changes, the main one is the addition of the missing HaloTheme preference to the Halos category. And of course, a couple minor bug fixes. Regards, Hernán

[ANN] OmniBrowser 1.0 alpha 4

Hi folks, I've just posted OB alpha 4 to SqueakMap. As I discussed with Stéphane and other here a few weeks ago, this release is intended for inclusion in some future release of Squeak - maybe 3.8 or 3.9 depending on how the plan for those releases develops. I've removed all the code related to package browsers and done a lot of clean up on what remained; this version should be a lot easier to work with. I've also put some effort into polishing up the code browsers, and now they're pretty stable and usable. So I encourage every one to give it a try and let me know of any problems or awkwardness you find. If there are no major usability problems with this release, I'll make a beta release and focus on bug fixing until it's solid enough for a final 1.0 release. A note on installation: there are a few quirks in the installer that I haven't been able to figure out yet, but they shouldn't prevent OB from installing. Just proceed through the warning on Bogus, and click 'No' when asked if you want to install version 224. Cheers, Colin
