Hi, Change Set: fixChronologyTests-brp Date: 26 September 2004 Author: Brent Pinkney Fix the Chronology tests for 3.8. 1. The tests can no longer assume the week start day, not the offset from GMT. 2. Some tests assume DateAndTime now < DateAndTime now, instead of #<=. This may be temporary. This change set makes all the 387 Chronology-Tests test cases succeed under 3.8 alpha. They work correctly under 3.8 alpha - unstable update 6271. The test cases just needed to be tweaked - they should be included asap. Thanks Brent

No VM changes > would then be required. -Lex Thanks for your responses, Dave & Lex. I wanted to use SYSV semaphores to communicate with some external processes that I'm using with Croquet. I had already implemented shared-memory functionality via the FFI, and after looking at the semaphore functions/data-structures decided I would just stay with shared-mem for now until I need more.. one problem I saw implementing semaphores with the FFI was that some of the parameters that needed passing were unions (not pointers to unions), and I didn't want to try to figure out how to do that via the FFI. Maybe I'll make a plugin later.. anyway I do plan to make the shared-memory stuff (which is actually pretty trivial) available sometime soon.. cheers, Daniel Faken

[BUG]Squeak Unstable 6271 load code updates missing?

Hi, I dont know if this is a bug but, in the latest unstable release (6271) with the new UI, where is the option to load code updates? Under configuration there is an option 'update from server' but it does nothing. Saludos, Hernán

Leap seconds are not algorithmic. They are based on the actual rotation of the earth, which is not predictable to that level. So they are declared by fiat, but are not totally arbitrary. This means that accurate-to-within-one-second timestamps in the future are IMPOSSIBLE to calculate. I mean that "CalendarWithLeapSeconds now addSeconds: (183*24*60*60)" is IMPOSSIBLE to determine; there might be a leap second within the next six months, and then again, there might not be. What's more, even if the rotation of the earth might justify it, there might be a revolt in timekeeping standards and the relevant body might no longer exist or might decide not to decree one. It's impossible to predict. The POSIX standard deals with the issue by explicitly refusing to acknowledge leap seconds. In effect, if a six month period contains a leap second (and it will contain at most one), the POSIX calendar for that period contains one second that is twice as long as the others. (Which makes "millisecond accuracy" for that period rather, um, interesting to contemplate.) Note also that leap seconds have been around for less than 50 years and when a committee of experts was asked whether they'd still be used in 50 years half said yes and half said no. Sooner or later someone is going to propose using self-levitating electric cables in some way to make the Earth a better clock...

New UI Big-Bang on unstable update stream

Hi folks, I just uploaded the huge (380Kb) changeset including the changes made in Small-Land image related to new UI. See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/squeak/message/85133 for a previous description of the work. Four new preferences dictates the new behavior, if you want to get the old UI just evaluate: Preferences disable: #easySelection. Preferences disable: #maintainHalos. Preferences disable: #tabAmongFields. Preferences disable: #generalizedYellowButtonMenu. Preferences disable: #showWorldMainDockingBar. And not forget to disable eToyFriendly preference if you miss the world menu: Preferences disable: #eToyFriendly. Except for any unconscious omission, the intended look&feel for a novice user is almost finished. To declare finished (instead of just "almost finished") the new tool named "Object Hierarchy" is needed and I plan to start with this tool as soon as I finish to write this email. On the other side, the behavior intended for expert/programmer user is incomplete. The intention is to replace for complete the current world's menu with the new menu-bar. It's not clear if we need just 2 modes (novice / expert) or 3 of them (novice / expert / programmer). The system is also crying for a mechanism to registry items in menu-bar and in tool-bar parts of the main-docking-bar. Help in any of these areas will be very appreciated. To finish this email I would like to say some tools like color-changers, geometry-changers, text attributes changers, etc that impact on the selected object could improve the usability of the new changes, again any help is welcome. Trying to build .sar experience

I wish to share this. This week end , I try to send a thanks in morph form to one of Squeakers what inspire me In the process of doing, I "discover" the following. SarBuilder is not part of 3.7 , I have to load from SqueakMap besides complaint off not safe for it. SarBuilder not seems designed for having other files as code ones, so I ending adding class method and founded several problems. How I could select files for including ? A easy and to hand solutions could come of steal code of FIND button in find any file. Guess what. I found something what could be a bug in OSX (Test the same in virgin image both in OSX and OS 9 in other mac, send mail about this to list and cure the behavior in my OSX machine) Add also a missing CODE button in dialog window. Reading code I found companionFiles (but no senders) companionFiles: anObject and additionalFiles ^companionFiles Finally , I decided for asking to user prefix of files and doing file := FileList2 modalFileSelectorForSuffixes: aList]. In building the sar, I found two more troubles what I think fix. [FIX][BUG] Float NaN's ( [er][et][su][cd] patch provided for #testNaN2 )

These tests provide coverage of Float behavior that is often confusing for Squeakers. Nice method comments. Good stuff, this should prevent a lot of confusion in the future! I have attached a patch for the #testNaN2 method. Question for Boris: Did this test actually pass on your Squeak system? >From the attached change set: The #testNaN2 test was using 1.0e200 to produce a Float infinity, which in turn produced a couple of different Float NaN values. However, the MaxVal of Float is supposed to be about 1.0e309. I changed the numbers in the test to 1.0e400 to guarantee creation of NaN values, and also added one line to the test that reconfirms the check: self deny: Float infinity sin = Float infinity tan. This produced the intended behavior for the test. The only question is, how could the test ever have worked in the first place? Is there a Squeak platform for which Float is *not* implemented as a double precision floating point?!? I also corrected a spelling error in a #testZero1 method comment.
