calling c++ functions using ffi (berkeley dbxml under windows)

Hello, I am trying to use Berkeley DB XML from withing Squeak. I already found out how to call C functions, but I got stuck on "Error : can't find function address" when calling a function in a C++ shared library. So I first looked up some info on the Squeak wiki and found this: http://minnow.cc.gatech.edu/squeak/3735. I used nm from mingw on the libdbxml22.lib and got a lot of some information I do not exactly understand. How to set current directory for OSProcess?

Background: I'm trying to call LaTeX from Squeak using OSProcess, so I can have nicely formatted maths formulae, using LaTeX preview mode and Ghostscript to generate PNG files from the PDF that LaTeX produces. But I'm stuck trying to invoke a command such as pdflatex.exe from Squeak in a directory of my choosing. So, having created a temporary directory, how do I run my command in a sub-process with that as the current directory? cheers, Simon

Hi Edgar, Thanks for your feedback. I was simply reporting a bug I stumbled into. If you think what you have written below is a better fix for the 3.9 image can you please add it to the report on mantis? That way it can do some good. I agree that the otherway to remove the bug is to remove the calling routine. So let's add it and let the harvester choose. Cheers, -Jer --- "Edgar J. Todd, A relatively long time ago, I was doing some MIDI/Morphic experiments, and deliberately avoided stepping for a few reasons. High on the list was that separate threads were a better model for what I would ultimately want to do with Squeak, and IMHO were easier to understand given that multiple things were happening on their own time scales. Making a long story short, I managed to hang Morphic in a big way, and needed a tool to debug it. I approached it with a variant of a trick I use in Dolphin, specifically for deployed executables, where I hook control-break to export call stacks on all non-dead threads. Squeak is different because the VM is (in my experience at least) interactive even if Morphic hangs. Dolphin deployed executables will hang if the message loop stops [*], leaving control-break as the escape valve. In Squeak, it appears that hacking the debug menu is sufficient. I simply replaced the dump of the active thread with all non-dead threads, IIRC, putting the active one on top. I also cleaned up the new lines a little to make the output look better. If there is interest, I can try to gather up a change set for it. It was invaluable to me in finding the problem I had, and suspect it would be useful to others. Bill [*] Please do not conclude that this is common, but I have encountered when COM based things failed to respond, when I managed to deadlock the GUI thread, etc. The control-break trick saved my hide a few times. 3.8.1 Sloooooow redraw with debugger

I've recently started doing some work in 3.8.1 and whenever the debugger appears, it takes about a minute for the screen to redraw bit by bit. Text looks like it is being hand typed. Is there a fix for this? -Todd Blanchard

Hello all, FWIW, I wish to second some of Lex's points: Halos are useful for, among other things, moving and closing incomplete morphs (i.e. morphs that do not yet respond to events or have widgets needed to do those things on their own), and the ability to cycle through the z-order is a VERY useful debugging/browsing feature. Halos are part of the morphic's foundation. Named morphs - very useful, and present in other systems (Dolphin's MVP), also useful for Process, etc. Serialization is a part of life independent of Etoys. I am not a big fan of ReferenceStream, and SmartReferenceStream, but would certainly keep them separate from EToys. Paint tool - very useful independent of EToys. Ditto flaps. I will stop there; my failure to mention something simply means I am less passionate about it than the items above, not that I disagree with Lex's assessment. Bill Wilhelm K. Colin, Fair enough, but the last time I tried it, printAllStacks() had a few out of place crs; the output can be improved with some small fixes. Is there a way to trigger printAllStacks() from the main window? It seems a very useful feature, and should be exposed (or I would like to be shown how to get to it directly). For rare bugs, it is helpful to have such tools readily available. Bill Colin Putney: The way to do this in Squeak without hacking the VM is to run it under gdb, trigger the slow redraw, then interrupt it from gdb. Then you can print the stack for all active threads with "call (int) printAllStacks()". Admittedly though, this is a pretty inconvenient technique to use on something that's not easily reproducible. I find that with the debugger fix from 3.9, I can go weeks without encountering a slow redraw. Wilhelm K. Who is Squeak for? What are the guiding principles for decisions? There's been a lot of discussion about this lately -- as always. So I thought some folks might (or might not!) be interested in the philosophy that Squeak is defined not by technical nor procedural means, but as a social phenomenon among the people who happen to consider themselves Squeakers (or Smalltalkers).
