Smalltalk version

Hello, long time no see :-) I'm doing things in Squeak again, so I'll try to follow the list once more... One of the first things I want to mention is the demise of the method 'version' on Smalltalk. It was actually decided at some point in time by Smalltalk environments to implement this method to return some description of the environment (the format of the version string was not standardized; go figure). This method exists in nearly all Smalltalk environments and makes it easy to write generic Smalltalk code with some environment-specific extensions for which one wants to check. I use this, for example in RoelTyper, to check some Squeak or VW specific things. But now this method is deprecated, and instead of being able to do: Smalltalk version I would now have to do: SystemVersion current version The problem is that the first expressions works in nearly any Smalltalk environment, while the second one works only in Squeak, which defeats the whole purpose of this method! So I will have to write the following: ^(Smalltalk at: #SystemVersion ifAbsent: [^Smalltalk version]) current version My proposal: please do not deprecate the 'version' method on Smalltalk, but implement it as: version SystemVersion current version Any opinions ? -- Roel

wxSqueak

Hello, i'm new to Squeak and i'm going to seriously like it, but i got a problem which i'm trying solve since a few days. I'm trying to install wxSqueak, but i can't realize how... can someone please give me some hints? I'm using Slackware Linux with the latest Squeak VM compiled from sources. MacRoman, Latin1, squeak fonts, and non breaking spaces.

Hi Bert and other concerned folk. In reading Bert's post about fixing fonts to show the invisible characters I was reminded of tripping over the nonbreaking space (nbsp). See mantis report: http://bugs.impara.de/view.php?id=2446 I use a Mac and MacRoman defines nbsp as char 202. And this can be gotten from Character nbsp. In the default font in 7021 this appears as the British pound sign. There are some squeak fonts (atlantis for example) that will show a blank space for that character. Now Bert's fix uses char 160. Which is used by browsers as nbsp but the Latin1 standard I was pointed to has 160 in a range of undefined character values. So the question is there is (at least one) bug in this. What is the bug? 1) Should nbsp be define as the latin1 value? 2) Should squeak fonts have a way of saying what set of characters they represent? 3) Should the available fonts in squeak be consistent in choice of encodeing? 4) Should Character class be refactored to reflect the ability to choose different encodings? 5) Should Character class be debugged to reflect Latin1 rather than MacRoman encodings? If so what do you do about MacRoman? I have enough knowledge to know these questions are significant to the well being and maintenence of squeak. I am out of my depth in trying to suggest answers. It would be good it someone who understands the issue more deeply would formulate a mantis issue around it. Updating a hierarchical list...

Hi! I am developing a hierarchical browser of hetergoenous objects (e.g. objects of different classes). I am using an AbstractHiererachicalList with a SimpleHierarchicalListMorph. The problem is, that if I add a new item into the list, it does not update itself and I must manually toggle the tree of the list to see the new item. I found out, that calling self list: (self model getList) perfectly updates the whole list and keeps the expanded trees expanded. The problem is, that the objects inside the list have no reference to the list itself so I cannot use the above call. Can anyone help? Is there a default mechanism to solve this problem, or it has to be implemented by an EventHandler? Thanks in advance, Elod

mac carbon VM 3.8.12b1 pending

This VM contains a major functional change to how UI events are processed. 3.8.12b1 When the VM was converted to carbon events I decided to place the interpreter() thread on a pthread. However over the years it became apparent this was an issue because many UI calls needed to run on the main UI thread, versus a sub pthread. To solve this I added the getUIToLock() call which locked the UI, actually it would setup a custom UI event and block until the UI thread did the callback. This worked well until the Sophie team started to experiment with Quicktime via FFI and we discovered that quicktime FFI calls needed to be on the main UI thread to avoid a crash. Thus in early 2006 we altered the FFI plugin so that it would call getUIToLock when it makes the FFI function call (the 3.8.11 series). This worked well until the Croquet folks complained that this caused Croquet to crash in glEnable. Further investigation showed that mixing Open/GL calls between pthreads caused a serious issue. Therefore I altered the VM to run under the main UI thread and poll for events. Polling is done before each callback looking for UI events and in the flush screen logic which is invoked about every 1/60 of a second to ensure pending screen updates are sent to the screen. Needless to say people should confirm their applications work as expected, the UI performance isn't greatly affected and overall performance is roughly the same. I'll note one nasty issue is that if you pull down a native mac menu the VM stops running, we'll see what we can do about that, but it may take a while. However usage of the mac menu bar is limited. macintosh squeak FFI prim plugin altered

I'll note here I altered the squeak FFI plugin for the macintosh, because in studying an issue with Croquet (more on this later) I discovered that the push for doubles was coded incorrectly, since say the beginning of time. For background information the way things work is that under the powerpc ABI floating point arguments are stuck in the floating point registers and also pushed to the stack. Usually the callee uses the value from the register, why bother getting from the stack, however the debugger might read from the stack. But once you exceed 13 floating point values then values are push and removed from the stack. Testing showed that if we needed say 14 doubles we were toast. double ffiTestDoubles14(double f1, double f2, double f3, double f4, double f5, double f6, double f7, double f8, double f9, double f10, double f11, double f12, double f13, double f14); f14 would have the wrong value, mind it was done correctly with the unix plugin, however I'll also note for folks using the Unix FFI plugin the pushing of long long data types is wrong, it thinks it should align the long long data type on an 8 byte boundary, however reading of the os-x powerpc ABI shows this is incorrect, and testing proves you are risking interesting times if you make an argument call using a long long datatype. Does anyone else feel that x ifNotNilDo: [: each | Transcript show: each; space]. (1) and x ifNotNil: [ x do: [: each | Transcript show: each; space]]. (2) ought to do the same thing? Or perhaps nil should respond to do: (and do nothing?) The rationale is to be able to use instance variables initialized to nil as empty collections, without having to repeatedly test if they are nil before telling them to do: something, as in phrase (2) above. One might be forgiven for thinking that ifNotNilDo: would have the same effect as do: on a non-nil object. I realize that it is probably infeasible to make a change like this, but I couldn't resist thinking about it. Andrew
