Weird Socket Timeouts

Hi everyone, So, I've moved up to Squeak 3.10.2 (#7179). I'm still running the same VM (3.10.6) on Windows XP. I'm running into a weird delay issue with the new SocketStream class. I've narrowed it down to Semaphore >> #waitTimeoutMSecs: Here's the scenario: The client is sending 220 byte packets to the server, about one every 50 ms. The server is basically buffering those, until the 4K buffer fills up. Looking at the stack, and with some logging, I can see that it is pausing in Semaphore >> #waitTimeoutMSecs:. I hacked the caller (Socket >> #waitForDataFor:ifClosed:ifTimedOut:) to pass something less than 50 ms as the argument. In this case it passes 31. I've added a couple log messages to the beginning and end of that method: 17154400 - entering Semaphore >> waitTimeoutMSecs: 31 17162095 - exiting Semaphore >> waitTimeoutMSecs:... The method took 7695 ms to execute, which seems a little strange. That's how long it took me to switch over to my client, and push the button to start sending packets, and then send 15 or 20 packets. Why isn't it timing out after 31 ms? The context of this whole thing is calling a variant of SocketStream >> #upTo: (one that doesn't wait for 100K of data). The packets are delimited with a CR (13). Am I using this wrong, or is there a problem here? update to OCompletion

Dear Squeakers, I fixed a few things in OCompletion: -When completing class names, performance should be improved when scrolling the list of possibilities. -Pressing tab when there are no matches in the cache of recently used entries will bring up the normal completion menu. -Fixed issue when on rare occasions the selected item in the menu would be out of sync with the entries and cause a walkback. Squeak web browsers

Two questions. 1. This wiki page <http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/3306> describes how to imbed an HTML link into text. When I do that and click on the link I am told "There are no WebBrowser applications configured." I do have the option of viewing the linked to page in raw HTML, so that much works. How do I configure the WebBrowser? 2. My 3.9 image does not include Scamper. This wiki page claims it should be included <http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/14>. Question about serial port communication

Hi everyone, I'm very new in the world of SmallTalk, so I hope you can help me... I'm working on an application that uploads sketches to an Arduino's board directly without its software (only uploading the .hex file). First of all I found a code based in java that works perfectly and now I'm "translating" into ST. The problem is: Arduino's responses with a particular bytecode when it receives data (at least that's how works the java-based code), with values 0x14 or 0x10. Before send the data block to the board, the program sends a * hello* bytecode for check responsivity, which values 0x30 and 0x20. The problem is that the board doesn't recognize the *hello* bytes, because it doesn't response to it. I made something like this (sorry but I don't have the code at this moment): *sendHello:* SerialPort2 *| ba |* ba := ByteArray new: 2. ba at: 1 put: 16r30. ba at: 1 put: 16r20. SerialPort2 nextPutAll: ba. SerialPort2 is a class that I imported from Scratch source code. The port is open correctly, I can see how the board receives data because the RX led blinks, but TX doesn't. I tried several ways to do this but anything worked. If anyone who's worked with Arduino knows what I'm doing wrong, tell me please. I will send the code and more detailed information if needed. Sorry for my bad english, Thanks -- Víctor

VM side EventSensor design questions

Hi all. I'm writing my own EventSensor class (as part of Subcanvas: http://gulik.pbwiki.com/Canvas) and I'm looking at what the VM is doing. When I press and release key under a recent Linux VM, I get three events: #(2 512613 53 1 8 0 0 0) #(2 512613 53 0 8 0 0 0) #(2 512664 53 2 8 0 0 0) The fields are (for those that don't already know this): 1: type (2=keyboard), 2: timestamp, 3: character in Mac Roman encoding, 4: key press/release (0=character, 1=press, 2=release) 5: modifiers (1=shift, 2=ctrl, 4=mac option, 8=cmd/alt) and the rest of the fields are unused afaict. Now, why do I get both a key pressed event and a character event? The key pressed event already has the character information. Is there a circumstance where these two events would differ in anything other than the type of event? The VM doesn't send any events for only a shift/ctrl/alt key press or release. Should it? If you hold down a key, you get a stream of key press and character events for the same key. Should it? I'd prefer to have character repetition handled within the image so that arcade games could be implemented. Finally, I'm lazy, so I'm going to ask this mailing list how Unicode input has been handled rather than read code. Do implementations modify the VM to send Unicode characters through as field 3 (or whatever) of the input arrays? Or do the implementations take the Mac Roman encoding from the event array, look up a keyboard mapping in the image and convert the result to the correct Unicode character? It's a "standard", although so far I've only found Microsoft to be declaring it as such. I haven't investigated finding out if X11, Win32 and the Macintosh APIs allow you access to them directly, but if they don't, I can still convert the VM's "characters" for the key press and key release events to this standard. Using this "standard" means that the VM's input events are the same across all platforms. I think I'm satisfied that the scancodes are the same across the vast majority of modern keyboards around the world. There seems to be two types of hardware keyboards being made: a US one and a European one. The rest of the world's keyboards seem to be one of these two models with different printing on them. Hello, First part of problem solved by changing order of includes as follows: In file debug.c #include<stdio.h> #include<stdarg.h> #include<string.h> #include<stdlib.h> #include "debug.h" (debug.h comes after stdio.h) But then there are other problems ahead
