We are already starting to see growing interest in Squeak from developers worldwide because of that. Right here, right now. I came to Squeak and stuck around for more than 10 years now because it always felt like a project with a vision. A vision that goes way beyond the simple-minded "I want something like the other guys have just a little bit nicer". If Alan's group started with that theme 40 years ago we would not have Smalltalk now. Mind you, I never implied that work should stop to improve Squeak in the here-and-now (go back and read what I wrote). But for me every improvement fits into a larger context. Squeak is a versatile tool for everybody. I've seen professional developers get excited about it as much as elementary school kids, high-school students, and PhD candidates. It's just a simple fact that the more "conventional wisdom" people have acquired, the harder it gets for them to appreciate the beauty of Squeak (and I happily admit that making the programmers' UI look less ancient would go a long way to make them give a second look). Being an environment for professionals and learners alike has always been a strong point of Squeak. There is no unresolvable tension there that I can see. For example, the Etoys team started 2 years ago to develop a product that got shipped to 500 thousand users by now, soon it will be a million. They did that with only a handful of developers working part-time. Sticking to the base system version they started out with was the only option (as everybody who ever did serious product development can relate to). Now that the hot development phase is over, the changes can be folded back into Squeak proper. I'm glad the Squeak community is made of individuals who care for different aspects of the system. Together we are creating a truly unique computing environment. And fortunately, there is a new home for those who cannot bear their "professional system" being marred by crayons here and there. Have fun with Pharo if that's all you ever wanted from Squeak. Seriously, enjoy it. Just don't bother those who think living under the same roof with kids isn't all that bad. - Bert -

Keyboard shortcuts in Cuis?

Hi Juan, I just noticed that at least some keyboard shortcuts don't work in Cuis, e.g. Cmd-k, Cmd-b and Cmd-t for opening a Workspace, Browser or Transcript respectively. I am on a Mac using the Squeak 4.1.1beta2U VM. Cheers, Bernhard

Method categories in test cases

Hey y'all, I am somehow annoyed with the categories we can find in various test cases. It gets sometimes messy, confusing, and some categories with the same meaning can have many forms. Writing a snippet in the workspace (see code below) revealed it wasn't as bad as I have first anticipated (see output below). Snippet is ran against community trunk + tests. My opinion is that every little bit counts and we would all benefit if we can inject some form of uniformity. How about defining some standard naming for categories in the basic image? Against? For? Ideas and suggestions? Oh! By the way, the most popular category of all time is.... (rolling drums)... as yet unclassified ! Cuis Development Enhancements?

I really like the simplicity of Cuis, but there are a couple enhancements I'd like to use. Primarily syntax coloring and auto completion. I tried loading one version of Shout, but it didn't work. A few refactoring operations would be nice as well (though not necessarily the full refactoring browser). I don't suppose anyone has adapted any of this for Cuis? Also, I haven't tried loading Monticello, but that would be nice too (since so much stuff is available as MC packages). I'd also like to see some cross-fork, simple widget library become widely adopted to make it possible to build simple GUIs that work across different forks. - Stephen

Improved MVCToolBuilderTests in source.squeak.org/tests

Dear Squeakers, I just tried out the New Community Development Model. I must say so far I like it very much. I added a tearDown which does a display restore. I think it is an improvement, albeit a small one. I just saved ToolBuilder-MVC-bp.14 to source.squeak.org/tests. Looks like I am the first one. :))) In 20 seconds I am about to finish the "Do good and talk about it" stage. ;-) All in all it took just some minutes. What's next? Cheers, Bernhard

Hi Bernhard, The way I've built that list was so ugly that didn't even reached the ontological status of a script, but I didn't found a fast and easier way to query a SqueakSource server for projects matching a name (there was some bug with an HTTPSocket stripping an url's location...anyway), it started like this: | args result | args := Dictionary new at: 'arg1' put: #('Monticello' ); yourself. result := HTTPClient httpPostDocument: ' http://www.squeaksource.com/@2QVpXXNcXjj-Xy-T/FaRHA2Qw' "This is the post url, add a ?NN for remaining pages " args: args. result content asUnHtml.
