Hi, I'm about to replace LiteralDictionaries with properly initialized PluggableDictionaries, then remove the class from Squeak. If you think that we should keep the class for some reason, then speak up now. Cheers, Levente

[Squeak 4.1] Collections: Failure of Concatenation Operator

Hello All I'm not sure if this is the right place to raise this, but at least this is an active group, so perhaps someone will give me a steer if it is not. I have mentioned it in Mantis, but the message numbers there make it seem that I am the only person posting there and nobody seems to be reading. Squeak 4.1 has a method String>>, which does not exist in earlier Squeaks. >From the method comment, it is there to allow a concatenation of a String with something which is not a collection; the example quoted in the comment is: Transcript cr; show: 'The value is: ', 3. which is illegal in earlier Squeaks, in Pharo, in Dolphin and in Smalltalk/X (I haven't checked others). The problem is that allowing it causes a failure in concatenating a string to an array of characters; in my case the construct was ('/', Character separators), which was used to generate a collection of terminators for String>>findTokens:. As a result, an established Squeak package (Todd Blanchard's HTML and CSS Validating Parser) does not work 'as is' on Squeak 4.1. I have discussed this in Mantis, and proposed two solutions: either get rid of String>>, (because what it allows should be illegal) or modify it so that the case where the argument is a kind of SequenceableCollection is dealt with as in earlier Squeaks. I have checked the latest Squeak 4.2 alpha that I can find, and the problem is still there. I have gone through the list of posts in this group which mention collections, and I cannot find a modification affecting this. If it has been dealt with, my apologies. If not, it seems a good idea to look at it before Squeak 4.2 is released. In the Wikipedia entry on Smalltalk, there is this line in the history section, 3rd paragraph, added roughly a year ago: "...Smalltalk-80 added [[metaclass]]es, to help maintain the "everything is an object" (except private instance variables) paradigm by associating properties and behavior with individual classes, ..." Is this one of those esoteric details that mere mortals are not meant to understand, or is this an error? Lawson

bug in OBMetagraphBuilder>>#reference

Hi, I just wanted to let the maintainers of OmniBrowser know, there is a bug with this method. The method reflects on its class and performs all that begin with #populate. However, it is not unusual to expect that someone's application might have a selector that also begins with the word 'populate'. And so those selectors would be performed as well. This is why, for cases like this, it is better for a tool, which is just a means, not an end, to be polite with the namespace; such as checking for 'obPopulate' perhaps rather than simply 'populate'. But that's just a mini-rant, not even the bug. The bug is, my 'populate' is not a unary message, so I get a failure on the perform, "incorrect number of arguments." I therefore always change the method to: OBMetagraphBuilder >> execute ((self class allSelectors select: [:ea | (ea beginsWith: 'populate') and: [ ea isUnary ]]) asSortedArray) do: [:selector | self perform: selector]. ^ self root Thank you, Chris

Download PDF using WebClient

Dear Squeakers, I have a problem downloading a PDF file using WebClient. I use the following code: | client resp file | client := WebClient new. [resp := client httpGet: 'http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6204244/mcs-ftl.pdf'. resp isSuccess ifFalse:[^self error: resp status]. "Stream the content from the response" file := FileStream newFileNamed: 'mcs-ftl.pdf'. resp streamTo: file size: resp contentLength progress: nil. file close] ensure: [client close] I took the code from the WebClient Responses help page and only slightly modified it. The problem is that I can open the file with Preview but all the pages are blank. The downloaded file has 9.9 MB while the original has 7.2 MB. So clearly something went wrong. Maybe some problem with the encoding? Any idea how to fix that? I'd be most thankful. Cheers, Bernhard
