DBus session end trap

I am investigating ways to have Squeak respond nicely to user logoff or system shutdown on Unix hosts. Currently files are left open, triggering a file system integrity check on restart and the associated threat of image corruption or loss. I began at signals, good old SIGHUP and SIGQUIT, working in Gnome. Neither was suitable. Next I dug into gedit to see how it worked and found that Gnome uses its own signal library. Someone told me Gnome's library just traps DBus signals, so I looked into DBus and read that I should use one of the higher level bindings. And what did I find on the bindings page (www.freedesktop.org)? Bindings for Squeak by Bert Freudenberg! Can someone give me a 1-2-3 on how to incorporate the six mcz files on SqueakSource into a 4.2 image? I am a Monticello newbie. This is very helpful. I didn't have much time to play with this yet (holidays interfered), but it's looking good. Loading into Squeak works fine as you said. I'll have to wrap my head around metacello some more to figure out what needs to be done on Pharo side, but this is certainly much better than starting from scratch. Thanks, Martin

Presumably in Squeak/Pharo it is easier for people to write primitives, which could make a difference. But I wonder how you overcome deployment obstacles, e.g. to deploy a new plugin you need to compile it on all the relevant platforms, get it included in the relevant distribution channels, etc. Does that really scale ? In my specific case with Xtreams I want to take advantage of OS level cryptographic primitives. These days they are pretty much always present on any reasonably recent platform. They are faster (usually orders of magnitude faster), someone else is responsible for keeping the algorithm portfolio up to date, etc. The other half of my motivation is making sure that an external implementation can be plugged in and demonstrate how to do it. Often you simply have to use specific implementations, either because it has to have particular certification, or be on particular "approved" list or it is backed by hardware support that has to be leveraged (accelerators, hardware security tokens, etc). So in this case I'm trying to use the native BCrypt APIs on Windows and OpenSSL's libcrypto everywhere else (for now). With decent FFI, all I really need to maintain is my set of packages on squeaksource. If done right, it should just work right after loading. I think that's about as easy as it can get. I'm not sure I could take on maintenance of a plugin as easily. Cheers, Martin

Thanks, do nothing, just wait and see until SqueakSource turns completely unusable. Smalltalk string API

I started referencing Smalltalk idioms at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_programming_languages_(string_fu… I could have focused on ANSI but have chosen Squeak/Pharo. Feel free to correct me and to complete me. This is a very enlighting exercize, especially for pointing when API turns to be not that bright. During my perigrination, I notably noticed this: #compare: returns 1, 2, or 3 : this is both very object oriented, very intuitive and very standard and the rest of the world is stupid, unless... #findLastOccurrenceOfString:startingAt: in its current form is stupid to my taste, because 1) implementation is inefficient 2) the startingAt: only skip the beginning of the string which seems odd for a rfind operation I would rather expect this kind of usage: last := aString findLastOccurrenceOfString: 'to' startingAt: aString size. lastButOne := aString findLastOccurrenceOfString: 'to' startingAt: last - 1. The CamelCase is sometimes abusive like #includesSubString: There is no format. I know, purists will tell me that encoding a format in a cryptic string is not in the Smalltalk spirit, but please then tell me how to specify a formatting efficiently and also remove cryptic regex encoding (a pity, it's not in trunk). I let a few holes (split/join etc...) Cheers

I would like to add this to the trunk. This would allow an image running on linux to read an envVar that points to a central directory of sources files (see thread [1]). On other platforms the environment dictionary is just empty. This could be easily changed in the future when the VMs on all platforms might offer a primitive to access the os envVars.
