I did a retest of loading Seaside 3.0 with SqueakMap into a fully updated image -- Squeak4.3alpha-11454. Seasides 3.0 loads fine but it still shows the behaviour that the Seaside control panel does not work and I have to use the workaround given by Tobias Pape (inspect on the Adaptor, then 'self start') (see screen shot). How do we get to a properly written, updated SqueakMap entry? BTW what does it mean that the version number (3.0) is in parenthesis whereas 2.8.2 is not? -- Hannes

Testing Seaside in Squeak4.3alpha-11321

Hi As Enrico mentioned that Pier does not load anymore in Squeak I did a test if Seaside loads and runs. I could load Seaside into Squeak4.3-11321 (as of today) with the script taken from 'Extending the System' "Seaside 3.0 http://www.seaside.st" (Installer ss project: 'MetacelloRepository') install: 'ConfigurationOfSeaside30'. (Smalltalk at: #ConfigurationOfSeaside30) load. (Smalltalk at: #WAPharoServerAdaptorBrowser) open. I run all the test of the category Seaside-Tests 834 of 834 run and passed However I cannot start an adaptor menu 'Apps' / 'Seaside control panel' add 'Adaptor' , e.g. WAComanceAdaptor clicking on the 'start' button has no effect. The feedback still says 'stopped' Any suggestions how to proceed? Thank you for the answer in advance --Hannes

Self new in arrowPrototype

The arrowPrototype class method of PolygonMorph looks like this: arrowPrototype "Answer an instance of the receiver that will serve as a prototypical arrow" | aa | aa := self new. ... initialize aa ... ^ aa I think the "self new" should be "super new", reasoning as follows: 1. It's purely a matter of taste whether the two polygon constructors are called "new" and "arrowPrototype", or "psychedelicTrianglePrototype" and "new". 2. A "new" method should not send "self new". 3. Therefore, no constructor should send "self new". (In particular, self might belong to a subclass, whose "new" method invokes this very constructor.) Is the bug in the code, or my logic? Rodney

[BUG] [] storeString goes into a tight infinite loop on a cog vm.

Hi all, This is a two part question. First is this still a bad bug in cog? I am using a March version of cog (3.9-7 ?). I have tried printing [] storeString in Sq11453 running on cog397 and on an earlier cog. The program goes into a tight infinite loop. It will not respond to a user interrupt and AFAICT the only way out is to kill the cog vm from the system console. I originally found it on an older vm before trying to update to the latest one I have downloaded. Second question is what was I really trying to say? I am collecting time to runs for a bunch of blocks. What I wanted to do was to print each block next to its run time. I.E. from a block get a string which if evaluated would be equivalent to the block. I thought that was what store string was for. But for block it doesn't work. It didn't work in 3.9 though there you could at least interrupt the attempt. printString is no help since it just tells me I have a closure. What particular closure remains a mystery. It seems to me that in many cases storeString fails to do its stated function. Anyway is there a known way to get from the block to a readable description of it? Hello all, I screwed up yesterday and widened the rift in our community. To me this means that I've volunteered to close the rift. Oops. *That's* not going to be trivial. I need a way to diff two images. I need to be able to roll some metrics around "how different are these two images." By "mutually missing," I mean specifically any case were one image needs a selector the other hasn't got. This merged list is what I mean by "mutually missing." For a first stab, I will be glad to ignore mutable state in the images and focus entirely on source code. I'd like to simply know: 1) how many selectors are mutually missing 2) how many methods are different (it might make sense to compare compiled methods, rather than source methods in this particular case if it will ignore stylistic differences to any extent) 3) How many classes are mutually missing ...and certainly many, many other things I'll learn that I need later. My plan is to just iterate over and enumerate these objects. It will probably take some time to do, no doubt. Could be a fool's errand, but at least from a technical perspective, I want to understand our differences better than I do now, and this is the best way that I know how. The real problem, the cultural divide, cannot be approached without full comprehension of the differences between our respective goal-sets. With my Software Anthropology hat on, the only way I know how to study these dynamics is to examine the artifacts left behind by the two groups after the split. In my heart I believe that we will some day arrive upon a base system which will be well suited to addressing all of our multifaceted concerns. Until that happens, though, the best thing I can do is try to read the diff. This is my penance. I'm writing to ask for advice. Does the approach I've outlined make sense to you? Is there a better way that you know of to diff the code contents of two images? If so, I want to know about your ideas on the matter. You may have pieces of the puzzle that I don't have.
