odd gotcha in workspace code for squeak and pharo

A discussion in IRC prompted me to try several things. In a nutshell, execute these two lines with two separate doits and you get an error. Select both lines and doit and you don't: a := [^true]. a value. I assume there is a valid reason for the difference in behavior, but it DOES remind one that workspace behavior isn't always the same as method behavior, even for something as simple as the above. [Announce] S8 in the Concrete Jungle

Hi! Alejandro Reimondo (Ale) will make a presentation about S8 platform and U8 service on Tuesday March 6, 2012 to NYC Smallltalk Developers group. http://www.nycsmalltalk.org/2012/01/10/s8-release-candidate-smalltalk-on-js/ There is a lot of topics to talk about..., the topic of most interest (to us) is to explain what we are doing with S8. A breaf description of our regional point of view about OT and Smalltalk, and our proposal of a modern formulation of development using Smalltalk will be the starting point of the presentation. The S8 platform was implemented to let us(smalltalkers) be responsible of our execution environments (as it was in the early days of smalltalk). That impose a change of attitude and the formulation/idea must be supported by tools and evidence/experience of others in the same field. As a demostration on how we can do that with S8, Ale will mention the platforms we have implemented for using the U8 service (designed to make worldwide social development with smalltalk http://u8.smalltalking.net ). On technical side, to mention where a person can start application development and self-learning using U8, he will describe the frameworks we have implemented on top of S8 (we all know the importance of frameworks) and the process we are using for development/testing of frameworks. The presentation is also open to the topics of interest of the audience. And Ale will be happy to respond questions about how to use S8 in diferent contexts of development. Some of the technical points that will be of interest are: - how to use our FFI framework? (make API calls, use native libraries and implement callbacks using S8; 100% smalltalk code) - how to do server side development? (NodeJS framework) - how to use your code from other smalltalks? - how to use javascript libraries? and (more important) how to write interfaces to existing libraries fast and minimize errors / testing points? - how to develop for Android and phones? - how to use cloud services? - how to work using U8? How to contact experts and people to do development of frameworks using the U8 service? - why we minimized the toolset at this stage? and what powerfull features of smalltalk we support today. - what is not implemented yet? and how to contribute? In all the presentations and coding events we made here (in Buenos Aires) the time has been short for going deep in groups, and the presentation was important to get in touch with people that has interest in global development as it is used to be in this decade. odd bug in Squeak 4.3, also in Pharo 1.3?...

I was creating a new video tutorial to show how to find all comments in all classes but I'm getting errors in both Squeak 4.3 and Pharo 1.3. In Squeak 4.3, the error is: Key not found: Comment In Pharo 1.3, the error is: Improper store into indexable object. the code is: myNav := SystemNavigation default. (myNav allMethodsWithSourceString: '"' matchCase: false) do: [:each| Transcript show: each asString, ' => ', ( each actualClass commentsIn: each sourceString);cr ] In Pharo, the error shows up after the Transcript output: UndefinedObject>>DoIt (myNav is Undeclared) In Squeak the error shows up each time after the Transcript output: [...] AbstractSound class updateScorePlayers => an OrderedCollection('Force all ScorePlayers to update their instrument list from the sound library. Horrible problem?

Hello. I have a question. I tested Random class>>theItsCompletelyBrokenTest to test my system. The comment of the method says that my system would be horrible if the result is not these values: #(0.149243269650845 0.331633021743797 0.75619644800024 0.393701540023881 0.941783181364547 0.549929193942775 0.659962596213428 0.991354559078512 0.696074432551896 0.922987899707159) but my result was more precious: #(0.1492432696508445 0.331633021743797 0.756196448000239 0.3937015400238808 0.941783181364547 0.549929193942775 0.659962596213428 0.991354559078512 0.696074432551895 0.922987899707159) Is it because my system has errors or the comment is obsolete or incorrect?

http://www.squeakmap.org OK, I've got a tidier version of a SqueakMap server rewrite here. If you have an account, you should be able to log in and make some changes. There are lots of stubbed out and missing features at the moment. I'll post a new version Mondays until it starts to look robust and full featured. Sometimes I get flashes of page source that go away when the page is reloaded. Not sure why at the moment. How to release OminBrowser? (was OmniBrowser)

"This might be a reason to go for a release 4.4 after that." This neatly proposes a solution to the problem of how to distribute the OmniBrowser. Releasing it with in an image release is one way to go. I don't think that eight weeks after releasing 4.3 that we'll be doing that. I'd expect 4.4 no earlier than Summer. And when we do release 4.4 a primary objective will to include Cog. By the way, Cog is a good example of how change works for Squeak. The transition has been going on for a year, a year and a half. And nobody would say Cog wasn't anything but a boon. What if something were not so clearly beneficial? That's what I figure the Jenkins server will be for. People can get used to things if they have an artifact to play with. If we want to make changes to the image to the extent we have for the vm, then we can accommodate both early adopters and late adopters by having a place to get an artifact long before it goes into the Squeak release. Eliot has his download page. It is to be hoped that the Jenkins server will do that for images. (Yes, we have an FTP download site, but it would be better to give accounts to people and let them try things out in public, generate tests, etc. And I'd like to see people who do fascinating things but have a lower profile, like Jon Hylands, have an account so people could try an image with their ideas.) How do we release OmniBrowser? This is an issue on the agenda for the next meeting of the SOB. One way is an Installer script. Perhaps another is a sar file like the one I used yesterday to load OSProcess? How about an image segment? If people could generate some ideas, then Tuesday's meeting of the SOB will be more productive. Thanks, Chris
