How to get a current clean 4.6 trunk image?

First I tried the way I normally use: I downloaded the latest Squeak4.6-13700.zip from ftp://ftp.squeak.org/4.6alpha/ and opened it with Eliot's latest Cog VM (http://www.mirandabanda.org/files/Cog/VM/VM.r3056/Cog.app-14.29.3056.tgz). I saw that the Kernel package is dirty. I did "Update Squeak". First I got a warning "About to serialize an empty package". I proceeded. Then I got a debugger with "Error: Bits size mismatch". See [1]. I tried with an empty package cache. However, the error stays the same. Then, I tried Jenkins: I downloaded http://build.squeak.org/job/SqueakTrunk/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/target… and opened it. I saw that the Environments package is dirty. The version name is (nice.47, cmm.51). I could update that image to 13889. However, the Environments package stays dirty. I hate to admit it, but I am stuck. ;-) Can some kind person help me? I am sure there is a way to get an up-to-date and clean trunk image! Saucers for all platforms

Hello, I bundled the Saucers game in a all-in-one archive: http://www.zogotounga.net/comp/squeak/Saucers-1.3-All-in-One.zip Could someone please confirm that it works on Mac OS ? Note: I made this from a 4.5 All-in-One (the current Squeak download) by simply replacing the inner image and init file; I did not rename anything. Is it compatible with the Squeak installation on Mac ? Anyway be careful... Stef

In trying to review this, I see that Behavior>>#startUp: simply says ^self startUp and there are dozens of implementors of #startUp (ugh). So, I tried evaluating "FileStream halt startUp" to see where the debugger takes me. Can't step into it, which means its a no-op. Are you sure the super call is doing something? Debugging block returns (runUntilErrorOrReturnFrom:)

Does anybody knows something about the status of the change in Context(Part) runUntilErrorOrReturnFrom: eliot proposed a change (something about dead sender contexts) (years ago :) I don't see this version in current squeak 4.5 images. This change is in the current pharo image but it givves some strange behavior while debugging block returns. 13271 <https://pharo.fogbugz.com/default.asp?13271> inconsistent behaviour when debugging Stepping over this code will show the inspector, although the debugger should return in the ^self send block . [ ^ self ] value. ^ 1 inspect.

How difficult is it to change focus on scroll?

Hi All, the recent click-to-focus changes are good but not perfect. I find using the scroll wheel frustrating because I have to click to focus before scrolling will affect the desired window. So would it be possible to select the morph under the cursor on a scroll wheel event? -- best, Eliot

Why are balloon texts (tooltips) not relative to the cursor?

...but pinned to the object/morph they explain? Sure, the objects want to "explain themserlves". :D That's why, I suppose, there is a speech bubble. However, imagine a bigger morph, where the cursor enters one corner and the user waits for explanation. The user has to look for the tooltip but is currently focused on the cursor. I argue that tooltips should always appear at the users current locus of attention, which is directly after a hovering action the mouse cursor. [OSProcess] #safeToForkSqueak when running headless

Hi folks. I’m running into an issue when forking images with OSProcess in headless images. In older versions of OSProcess #forkSqueak would try to fork in any case, independent of the presence of or the connection state to XDisplayControlPlugin. In dtl.57 #forkSqueak was changed to explicitly check if XDisplayControlPlugin is present and can be controlled. This is obviously a good thing for when the image runs headful. In my case however I can no longer fork my headless image, even though I don’t need an X session. Important: apparently #safeToForkSqueak answers true if the XDisplayControlPlugin is available, even in a headless image. But since we don’t need windows, we don’t install X libraries on our server and so #safeToForkSqueak answers false. So the whole thing boils down to a situation where Squeak / Pharo is run in an environment where the XDisplayPlugin can’t be loaded but where forking is still possible. I don’t know how to do this in a cross platform way but for Pharo we could extend #safeToForkSqueak with a headless check like this: safeToForkSqueak "The forkSqueak method is currently supported only for X11 displays with XDisplayControlPlugin available. If the plugin is not available, the child Squeak VM will continue interacting with the X display, which leads to errors in the parent Squeak, including VM crashes." ^self canControlXDisplay or: [ Smalltalk isHeadless ] I’m going to dirty patch this for my images because I really need it but I think some version of this patch would be a good thing to integrate into OSProcess.
