The caching approach has turned out to be more work than I expected (though  
I've gotten all existing and new
tests running clean). I'd be delighted to remove the cache and send  
#asByteArray every time. How much of a
consensus do we need before I move forward? I don't know that recompiling  
existing methods would be
necessary, since the platforms that don't support it won't have any! --James
