For example: SimpleButtonMorphs are designed to have: a "target" an "actionSelector" and "arguments" It invalidate the posibility to adapt it to diferent behaviour without subclassification. I have encountered the same pattern in more places inside squeak and now i think we need "actions" as objects. If an objects needs to do an action, it must contain anAction. e.g. aSimpleButtonMorph>>doButtonAction can simply do: ^self action evaluate and in Object we can implement: evaluate ^self for Contexts: evaluate ^self value for MessageActions: evaluate ^self receiver perform: self selector with: self arguments and in Action we can implement the selector #, that returns an ActionSecuence (Action subclass: #ActionSecuence) that when evaluated perform evaluation of it childs. MultiMenu bug in morph.

today I was working with morphs and opened the new morph menu and submenu... when the menu was open, I resized the world window and return to the menu but clicked in the parent menu. The parent menu closed but the child menu not. Is it a bug or an intentional behaviour? Ale.

Luciano, If you are interested to "primitivize" parts of your TTS framework using the CCodeGenerator of Squeak I can help you (we can use my VM-PlugIn framework to insolate the TTS code from main Interpreter). We have a Delphi product (an interactive story authoring system called StoryHarp) which I'd like to see in Squeak (we almost wrote it in Squeak in the first place). It uses speech recognition and text-to-speech (although the speech recognition is not as essential). I've looked at linking Squeak to SAPI and Microsoft Agent under Windows via Squeak primitives -- but that would just provides access to external TTS and SR systems. I did not get anything working though because I decided to use Delphi instead. I don't know much about implementing TTS or SR engines themselves, but I've done some signal processing stuff for machine vision and acoustic positioning. It may sound silly, but TTS is a real whiz-bang feature that would attract more attention to Squeak. People are very excited by Macintalk on the Newton for example. Also, I've heard one can also use a good TTS system to generate wave forms to use as the basis of a speech recognition algorithm. TranslucentColor under Morphic in 1.31

Greetings all, After messing around with Squeak at home since 1.1x, I finally have an opportunity to use it at work, to prototype UI ideas for clinical research software. Morphic is a good vehicle for this purpose, and I can't wait to see the improvements in 2.0! As soon as I get a web page established, I'll put up the (non-trade secret) Morphs I have put together (not that they're a big deal): EntryBlankMorph -- I needed something fancier than UpdatingStringMorph. In particular, I needed a visible and movable insertion point. This exercise wound up showing me the difference between the easy way and the hard way of handling Morphic events. (For the curious, the hard way is when you ignore most of the built-in facilities. :) SweepableRectangleMorph -- Load a Hand with a new instance, click once to pin one corner, and click again to pin the opposite corner. The HandleMorph class made this a snap. Now, on to the subject: Should I expect TranslucentColors to work in Morphic yet? Overlapping two RectangleMorphs whose fillColors are TranslucentColors doesn't produce the result I expected, even at a display depth of 32 (per the comment for TranslucentColor>> pixelWordForDepth:). The Morph in front wins, period. I looked at BitBlt class>>alphaBlendDemo, but didn't glean anything I could take to Morphic. Handing a 32-bit-deep FormCanvas to a WorldMorph via #canvas: isn't the right approach; the WorldMorph seems to discard it at the earliest opportunity. Any and all suggestions cheerfully accepted, including "Just wait a few weeks and your prayers will be answered." :) Happy Squeaking, --Michael Stevens

MultiMenus for Squeak -- RFC 000

Hello all, In porting old apps to the Siren framework, I'm rethinking my old MultiMenu extensions. I'd like to describe the current version and solicit groupthink on other possible interaction techniques. The basic extension is that controllers (or their editors) can maintain an ordered collection of menus (a de-composed yellow button menu), and that simple extended menu controller interaction techniques allow users to quickly step through them. This is not unlike Squeak's "more..." ParagraphEditor menu item, but it makes it easier for the user to "cycle through" a list of smaller menus (which might correspond to the categories of hierarchical menus or the items in a menu bar). The three interface techniques I've used are: Key-step: pressing any keyboard key (e.g., <SPACE>) steps to the next menu Multi-click: clicking on the "border" of a menu steps it; and Mouse-chord: yellow button to pop-up, red button to step. I'm sure there are more, and they're each typically one method in the controller... If you get used to this, it's faster to navigate lists of smaller menus, for example in the text editor, there are 3-5 item menus for edit, search, eval, file, font, and finding "print-it" can either be pop-up-yellow-button, navigate to umpteenth menu item, or pop-up-yellow-button, navigate to nth sub-menu and mth menu item, or pop-up-yellow-button, step to 3rd small menu (with menu border picks, red-dbl-click, or key-presses), pick 2nd of 3 items. BTW, Sun Labs (www.sunlabs.com) has a project on persistent object environment for Java and Java 1.2 implements Collection class and its subclasses. Of course these classes aren't so easy to use like their counterparts in Smalltalk... And there are many UI ideas from the Self 4.0 project from Sun Labs that Java language have used, like automatic layout (Java LayoutManager) and some UI widgets. But we have a sincere form of flattery too: the Morphic UI. About this, I would like to know what enhancements are planned for Morphic UI on next release of Squeak? I would like to have the "mechanism" that Morphic interface uses to make the UI components comunicate between them and comunicate with some "model" class.
