Yeah!! What do you think of Squeak's polygon rate--enough to do something like Quake? I suppose you'd probably have to disable lots of goodies like fog that a good 3D card would give you, but it would still be pretty cool. Plus it would be excellent propaganda, for those of us who are having to constantly defend using such a "slow/wierd/unused/unsupported" language like Smalltalk. Is that right? I was under the impression that the object isn't purged until the gc occurs. [Indeed, what is described is something more like reference counting than gc]. Further, can't you register objects for finalization, thus giving each object a chance to say "I want to stay?" or to copy itself somewhere -- or would that action be beyond the scope of a valid finalization action? Sorry if I'm still being dull.

I seem to remember that they intend to change the image format in the not to distant feature when they incorporate some of Tim Rowledges changes. Yep, this doesn't give you the all in one distribution. However, it is still handy to ship one VM and then just ship bare images that will run themselves. You can get this functionality on Windows by associating ..image with the Squeak VM. I think that the mechanisms are different on Unix depending on the Window Manager/Desktop you use. This mechanism is independent of the WM/Desktop. -david

You could do something along these lines by simply cacheing likely objects in a (non-weak) collection and modifying the lowSpaceWatcher to release some of these as needed. Cheers, Bob

Check the method comment in #readImageFromFile:HeapSize:StartingAt: (you weren't paying attention earlier, were you? ;-) and for the details the implementation of #checkImageVersionFrom:startingAt:. This method checks twice for a valid header, once at offset 0 and again at offset 512. (I implemented it like that because images transferred from Mac to Unix often had what looked like the resource fork prepended to the data.) The only way it could break is if the image version number (currently 6502 -- another left-over from Smalltalk-76 running on 8-bit micros perhaps? ;-) ever reaches 572617585 (or 1903370530). > Ideally, one could save a unix-ified image and still have it > readable by other VM's, too. Trying to track down these things takes a lot of time and energy, and it's not clear it's well spent. Why not just add 'em to a message-body-dependent killfile?
